Shutdown text display instead of graphic?

How do I see by default, a text display of any and all operations being performed during shutdown instead of the graphic shutdown screen? I know ubuntu shows you some things when shutting down and it's nice to see what is going on. I tried just hitting esc key but the graphic is still there.
