System Lockups

Hey,

Lately my Vista machine has been acting weird. When in any program whether it be, FireFox, Chrome, Minecraft, etc. The program will "Stop responding" and then everything else on my system will stop responding also, then it will freeze for about 30 seconds, this happens almost every 5 minutes.

It was happening so I formatted my HDD and re-installed Vista, but it still is happening, I'm not sure if its a hardware issue or not. I doubt there is anything on my system that could cause this to happen, nor have I overclocked anything, other than my GPU which was overlocked (black edition) when I bought it new.

I have also looked at my temperatures, nothing seems unusual, my GPU runs around 55C idle, and my CPU runs around 38C idle, my chassis temp is around 30C, and I have also cleaned my system out from any dust/hair, etc. I'm pretty sure all my drivers are up to date.

Specs:
AMD Phenom II x6 1055T 2.80GHz
ATI/AMD HD5850 1GB GDDR5
8GB DDR3 1666MHz RAM
Retail +Plus 650 WATT PSU
Asus M4A77T/USB3 motherboard
1TB WD 7200RPM HDD

So can anyone help me figure out what might be the problem as this is really making my frustrated.

Thanks,
Archey

Welcome

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

- No point to run AV scan, as its a clean OS.
- Memtest won't help as I've swapped out for brand new ram, still happens.
- Safe mode won't really do much since its a new OS, and It happens while running programs.
- Not OCed
- Have monitored hear, they're normal.
- Not sure how to tell if my PSU is faulty but I've had it for about 2 years

Run memory test, possibly you need to reseat the sticks
Run in safe mode and give me the results
Read the post, unless you have done the specific test, do it now.

I've tried running memtest86, when i downloaded it, it was just a bunch of source files, is there a guide on how to install it?

Well ran in Safe mode with Networking, Did some browsing on the internet testing out lockups and it didn't seem to crash. It's weird because about a month back it was doing this, I formatted and re-installed and it kept on.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. This article describes how to troubleshoot problems in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 by performing a clean boot. This article also describes how to start the Windows Installer service and how to reset the computer so that it starts as usual.

Note When you perform a clean boot, you may temporarily lose some functionality. When you start the computer as usual, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or you may experience the original behavior.Back to the top

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
  2. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image

, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

  3. On the General tab, click to select the option Selective startup, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
    Collapse this imageExpand this image

  4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
    Collapse this imageExpand this image
    2440071.png

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
  5. Click OK, and then click Restart.
Step 2: Enable half of the services

  1. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
  2. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
  3. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
  4. Click OK, and then click Restart.
Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.Back to the top
Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

  1. Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1.
  2. Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
  3. Click OK, and then click Restart.
Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.Back to the top
Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item. Back to the top
Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
  1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image

    VistaStartButton.jpg

, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Isn't that just the same as Safe mode?

Also making it to run nothing won't help at all as it happens when I'm actually doing stuff, if you read my first post I said that one thing will lock-up then the other for about a minutes but come back, and itll happen.

No this is not safe mode. Safe mode runs with only a few drivers. This is regular mode with a few more drivers than Safe Mode and if a program is the problem, we can determine which.

Im signing off for the night. Its 1 AM here. Night.
