Laptop with flaky screen aborts boot and goes into hibernation

Possibly after overheating the screen, I can no longer boot Vista except with a rescue disk. I've tried the latter several times. Sometimes it runs a chkdsk and sometimes it reports "no problems". I get as far as a live cursor on a black screen, going into hibernation with a regular boot almost immediately, and into a screen saver in safe mode after a while. The ntbtlog.txt file returns a list with 150 driver entries. Not loaded are NDProxy.sys; srv.sys; and parport.sys

The reason I know all this is because a Puppy Linux usb stick OS boots perfectly with an aux. monitor connected. But I want my Vista back! Please advise.

Hello Nicky, thanks for posting here for assistance, i will toss out an idea for you to try as i think you have an issue that this may well fix for you.
Look at this please : Startup Repair: frequently asked questions

This is a start up repair which basically goes like this :
first this : Boot into the System Recovery Options screen.
then do this : Click on the Startup Repair option.
Note : The Startup Repair tool will attempt to fix your computer and get it booting up again.
Note : Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs. If repairs are not successful, you'll see a summary of the problem and links to contact information for support. Your computer manufacturer might include additional assistance information.

Brink, who is one of the Admins on this site has posted an answer to a similar issue as you have described. So, if this works. he gets all credit.
Thanks again for you post. Please post back results so we may do something else if this is not working for you.

Thanks for the reply Yard Dog, but I did the "Startup Repair" already from the rescue disk I mentioned before; with the results as above. I also did a "System Restore" initially in safe-boot mode, right after the problem cropped up, but with the same kind of boot abort. Also contacted Acer, but they say they won't fix "legacy" units (mine is 4yrs old!), and aren't interested much in talking to me. I can get at most of my data through Puppy, but will have a hard time retrieving mail related stuff. Wish there was some way to still do a backup to DVD; either of the entire disk, or just the data. My laptop screen is still on most of the time. It just flickers a bit sometimes. But I still think that transfers some signal to the Vista OS to go into hibernation; which is particularly bothersome during booting. Any ideas?

Welcome, try to bring it back via the restoration partition

1. Power on the computer
2. At the white ACER BIOS screen, hold the Alt key and press the F10 key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery.
3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click Restore to Factory Default Settings
4. Click OK to continue
5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore a fully functional factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
6. Once eRecovery has run, press OK to reboot unit

Thanks for replying too, Richard. I was familiar with the factory restore, but there was a lot of valuable info in the H2G link. I'm o.k. for the time being, booting Puppy from usb and having the aux. monitor hooked up, as booting Vista seems to be out of the question right now. All my disks mount fine with reading/writing priv's enabled. Thanks again both.

No, that's an absolute last resort. Since my problem is booting, and the only involvement Acer software has during that process is supplying some system driver files, it's gross overkill. Just like MS does, they should provide a non-destructive way of fixing those files that were corrupted, during me (stupidly I grant) trying to wake up a system that shut down because of an overheated screen. But Acer suggest to make use of a paid service if I don't do it their way.

Moreover I'm still investigating an easy way to back up a couple of 30Gig partitions. Although in Linux, everything is a file; as far as I understand it, the maximum file transfer size is 4 Gigs. At least that seems to be the max. size of the "shared folder" in a networked computer. So it looks to me I'll have to make an clone/image of the partition, or something like that; then split it in 4-Gig chunks and network or load burned DVDs onto another computer. Is that right? Anyway I don't quite understand the process myself yet. Especially the restore back into files part. I guess I should make a separate partition for that. All I know is that I'm not going to transfer directory/files individually. And I'm not going to spend money on an external drive.

I just bought another laptop (Win 7) and hooked the two together with a x-over lan cable after booting the new one with a live Puppy CD. I got a simple network going, but while windows would show me a directory tree structure of the remote computer in explorer, no such thing in Puppy.
