Vista 64bit Home Premium Freezing

I'm a fairly computer-literate person but I may have painted myself into a corner. I can't start my Vista up through normal means as explorer.exe freezes the entire computer. This is a bit convoluted so I'll start at the beginning.

For a few days my computer needed to do some heavy lifting, so I left it on a few times overnight lately. I hadn't powered off/on for the past week or two, so I can't tell exactly when the boot problem appeared, but I noticed the whole thing had gotten mighty slow. No HDD access noise or anything, just a longer and longer wait at various stages (green loading bars, then desktop loading, etc).

I assumed at that point my login attempts were locking up the computer. So I loaded a restore point with a Vista recovery CD, to no effect. I began to noticed that the comp would lock up at different points of the login (and when I used different Vista accounts), so I thought maybe the system files were damaged. I ran the Startup Repair (?) program on the recovery CD, which apparently detected errors. It did its thing, but after the computer locked up upon restart the entire process quit on me.

The next time I ran it to try to continue the repairs, it scanned the OS and detected no errors. Around this time, something weird also happened with the USB readers. They stopped detecting the all-important thumb drive which held the SATA drivers necessary for the recovery CD to detect my OS. USB is a little unreliable now as the recovery CD will only detect my digital camera, and trying to browse through any devices (My Computer) freezes the comp. Safe Mode sort of works. This is where I've been doing most of the tinkering and how I'm posting this.

Here are my options with F8:

Start Windows Normally: Awful load time, locks up at login if you're not quick to type in the pass. Typically locks up during loading, usually before my programs appear.

Safe Mode /+Network: Slightly better load times, locks up when explorer.exe loads. The menubar and my programs appear, but something causes it to reliably lock up just after my first program is given an icon (sndvol.exe).

Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt: It works. Renamed explorer.exe to explorer2.exe and can load SM with network. Loading explorer.exe after naming it back will cause the same lockup normal loading does.

Repair Windows (or something): My OS is stamped (Recovered) now, so I can't run sfc. Loading this option causes a swift BSOD with codes of the 0x00..07 variety.

Last Good Config etc... nothing else works. I ran chkdsk and it didn't find so much as a bad sector. So I'm seeking the help of people more experienced in Vista before my web gets more tangled. Also, I have no restore points because something was disabled at some point or another, erasing them all. I have SP1. A recent scan with Spybot (updated) shows we're free of spyware.

Hi,

Well all that sounds drastic & I would suggest a complete recovery to day one! Do you need anything saving from the curent Vista or XP systems?

Do you have the OEM recovery medium (DVD/CD's), can you access to the recovery partition?

No OEM stuff, but the recovery partition should be around, although I don't know how to access it.

I would like to save everything. I have a collection of programs and other stuff that isn't easy to transplant.

I don't think I have a recovery partition. Saving my stuff will be time-consuming even if I find enough free space elsewhere.

I have no experience with non-Windows OSs. I should use Ubuntu to determine if it's a hardware problem, you say?

My Computer

Yes, you could use Ubuntu to verify a hardware or software problem. If it loads and works it is a software problem and I will help you find the cause.

The boot log should be attached. I also think I found the hidden partition with Ubuntu. The first time I ran it I was able to browse my OS partition freely but it was unable to mount it (and my HDD) the second time. I wanted to install Ubuntu but I'd have to fiddle with the partitions.

This
mrxsmb20.sys
was the last driver to load and possibly the problem. What have you installed lately that can cause a conflict. This driver is an MS driver and should not be tampered with.

I can't think of anything. The only thing I've installed lately has been benign stuff like Notepad++. I also went back to a restore point a few days before there was a definite problem, when loading times were irky but it definitely didn't lockup.

Also, I found a fairly old registry copy that at worst is missing some small stuff. I backed up my current reg. when this all started. Would there be any risks in loading the old file and trying to boot?

My Computer

Try going back with System Restore a week before any sign of a problem. That restores registry too and its safer.

Last Known also freezes.

Any suggestions on how to install Ubuntu that isn't too disruptive? I don't know how to get past the partition selection since it detects the hidden partition and I don't wanna fiddle with that.

I just discovered the Event Viewer and noticed I got a ton of errors during non-Safe Mode startup.

nvstor64
A parity error was detected on \Device\RaidPort0.

I'll be Googling this.

My Computer

That is your Nvidia driver. Try to update it at the website. If it shows in event viewer it may be the cause of the problem

I've tried a bunch of solutions and none work. Drivers included.

There could be more than one problem that's throwing us off. If you ignore the slow load times then you only have a crashing explorer. I enabled boot logging again and noticed the previous .sys file, along with some files after it, loaded properly, so the problem may be harder to pinpoint than that.

What about loading a monitoring program in Safe Mode, then loading explorer.exe and reading the log?

My Computer

Do you have an install DVD?
