Solved B(lack)SOD whilst booting into Vista

Hi,

I am having trouble booting into Vista. It get through the BIOS selection screen and too the Microsoft Corp. (Green bar) screen at which point, the screen goes black, the drive light eventually goes out and nothing happens. I can get in via 'Safe Mode' but when I try 'Safe Mode with Networking' it hangs after CRCDSK.SYS.
Please could anyone help diagnose this problem?

System details:

- Vista Home Premium x86 (32-bit)
- original installed OS is on the system
- Vista is an OEM (pre-installed) version?
- System (hardware) is approx. 4years old?

I have attached the BSOD Dump as but afraid I could not create the 'System Health Report' as advised as the perfmon /report did not appear to work in 'Safe Mode'

Many Thanks.

Welcome
You have given us only one MiniDump report. It is not usually possible to give a definitive answer with one report. That being said this driver appears to be the problem, update it

Thanks richC46. I'll try updating that file. Do you have any suggestions as to the best place to get the file from? I've tried the HP website and there doesn't seem to be any obvious update for this driver. I am using an HP G60-100EM machine.

Thanks

Hi richC46,

Nothing obvious on the Creative Technology website. I've gone back to the Video Capture Device (Built in Webcam is the only one I have) and set the driver to C:\Windows\system 32\drivers\usbvideo.sys (as per HP support website) so it is no longer pointing to the OA004Vid.sys driver. However, when I reboot in to windows proper, I still get the same black screen. Is there anything else I can try or info. I can provide to try to fix this?

Many Thanks

As a safety precaution to be sure that this is not a virus using the name of a driver. Update your anti virus and make a full anti virus scan. Download, update and make a full scan with malwarebytes. Make sure that in both cases its a full scan.

OK make a system restore point, just in case of problems.
Go to search by the start button, type device manager. In device manager, uninstall the questionable driver. While there, also uninstall any drivers that have a small yellow marker. Then boot. Intall the new driver, from the device manager site. Boot.
And then hope

Hi richc46,

Quick update. I ran the scan and it picked up on 3 enries related to a PuP called Zwangi so I quarantined/deleted these (Annoyed with Mcafee for not picking up on these!! Also, Mcafee does not run a scan in Safe Mode so may need to think about changing my Anti-virus software!!).

Secondly, I uninstalled a Windows Webcam Driver from within 'Programs and features'. When I checked in the drivers folder, OA004Vid.sys had gone along with various other OA004... files.

I rebooted, and at the second attempt, success!!! Windows booted normally and appears to be working OK. I'm just a bit scared to reboot again in case I can't get in.

Anyway, many thanks for all your help on this. Don't think I would have ever have sorted this out myself.

Cheers,

Andy.

Happy and Healthy New Year to you too richc46 (and all on the Forum).

Quick update. It seems I was a little premature in thinking this was fixed. After rebooting my machine again, I was back to the same problem. However, your suggestion about uninstalling the questionable driver using Device Manager, got me thinking. As I could boot in 'Safe Mode' but not in 'Safe Mode with Networking' I decided to go to 'Safe Mode' and unintall all the drivers I could under the heading 'Network Adaptors'. I then tried to reboot normally and successfully got in to Windows. Presumably all the necessary drivers where then re-installed and everything appeared to be working OK. I have since tried rebooting several times and these have all been successful. It would appear that the problem was some sort of corrupt driver within one of the Network Adaptors.

I think I can now mark this thread as solved and hope it may help someone else experiencing similar symptoms in future.

Many Thanks again richc46 for all your help in helping me to resolve this problem.

Regards,

Andy.
