freezes and crashes but no virus

hi guys,

been having problems downloading a microsoft update and i thought that was bad, problem is after contacting microsoft and them checking my logs, they told me my problem was most likely with the registry or system in general.

since then my computer keeps freezing or being extremely slow for minutes on end, i have to restart it about 3 times a day, it's fine for a while then freezes or crashes again.

i have ran full scan with norton and full scan with malewarebites and nothing wrong there, i was really hoping somebody could look at my system's specs and tell me what is wrong and if it can be fixed or do i need to do a clean reboot.

thanks in advance

I suspect that the failed download may have corrupted your installation and you may need to do a Vista repair.

However, something that keeps coming up repeatedly in the windows error reporting is-

TVCapSvc.exe.

I don't know what that is. I noticed there is a tune card disabled. Maybe it's related.

Maybe the other guys can help out on this one.

thx

that tvcap thing has been there for months every time i start the pc, i think it had to do with my previous screen, it might be related to my current problems, but at the same time it predates them so not really sure.

thanks for your help

3RD PARTY DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Create a System Restore Point prior to doing any of this. DO NOT mess with the drivers themselves - leave the Windows\System32\drivers directory alone unless we specifically direct you to it!
- Please either update the older drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall them from your system. Reference links are included below.
- DO NOT use Windows Update or the Update Drivers function of Device Manager.
- Please feel free to post back about any drivers that you are having difficulty locating.

first i would like to say thank you so much for the time you spent answering me.

i have gotten rid of the tv background thingy, i have re enabled my wireless adapter and updated it, got rid of the other two devices as they were not needed.

on the driver front: got rid of novatel (not needed), updated the ralink, logitech and avermedia ones, western digital one was up to date and i got rid of everything related to cyberlink (tought i did that before but some bits remained, well until now anyway)

pc experience has improved as well as starting up time, but there is still something nagging at the system, browsers get to not responding status, then come back after a while, opening control panel or other locations freezes (not always but still), very slow to open folders containing a lot of files (like music or pics) i understand it takes a while but it is noticeably slower than before.

all in all, things are better and i really have to thank you for that, but something is still not quite right with my system so i hope that you or someone else can figure out what exactly.

thanx again

My Computer

Could you please rerun and post a fresh copy of the jcgriff2 upload?
And include (in your next post) some description of what's not right and when you noticed it (we'll use the time to look at the entries in several of the log files).

My Computer

pretty much every window i open takes a long before the content appears
vlc player crashes mid video, complete screen freeze
both opera and mozilla give me the "not responding" message, before coming back, before not responding again
sometimes get a log on security warning on a black screen if a program froze and i tried to do a ctrl alt del to open task manager

Looks like you need a reboot also - a FixIt that you tried isn't working because it's waiting for a reboot to perform another operation.

From this post: Search Not Working Error:0x80040D23 - Microsoft Answers
Step 1: Run the Microsoft Fix it
Windows search is not working and search is slow or shuts down Fix Windows Search when it crashes or is not showing results
Step 2: If that does not help, run the system file checker tool.
Check the article How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 “How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7”
Lot's of errors about StarOpen.sys being incompatible. I believe it's some sort of mobile phone software - Uninstall it immediately:

It suggests that the system is low on resources, so using resource monitor may help find the problem. Try this to get some info: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/111020-resource-monitor.html

How much free hard drive space do you have? Try running the Windows Disk Cleanup utility from Accessories and reboot. Also, do you have the Windows Disk Defragmenter enabled?

i have rebooted and ran the fix it tool again, but not sure about the result so i attached the sfc scan result
uninstalled the staropen related program (samsung in my case)
i have followed the instruction about the search engine, once again not sure about if it worked or not

but the result monitor bit, i simply do not understand, i have opened it, but really looking at it i cannot tell what is normal or abnormal behavior, what should be or not be there and if things are perfoming as they should or not

(on the plus side windows are much faster to open)

Great. I was just pointing out common things that people are unaware of.

There are two programs that I'm aware of that caused system slowdowns-
Mozilla (about a year ago) and Excel 2003 (it could have been Excel 2007).

You could also try a clean startup to narrow down the cause of the slowdown.

If you boot into Safe Mode, is it still sluggish?

You could try a clean boot. To do that, run msconfig.exe. Under services, checkmark the box for Hide all Microsoft Services. Then hit Disable All. Under Startup, hit Disable All. Reboot. If one of the services or startup items was slowing it down, the system should be faster.
