Solved Repeated BSOD's

I've never been able to get this machine working right after I built it back in 2009 and as a consequence, it sat unused until about a month ago. After dusting it off and getting all the intervening Vista updates, I thought the problems were resolved, but it's back to its old troubles again. Typically, the machine will initially fail to boot, saying it didn't shut down properly, but will then start up and run fine (at least not BSOD).

I'm not sure if installing SP2 has been the cause of anything, but the problems appear to have gotten worse after that update ran earlier this week. Last night I got a BSOD after the machine failed to come out of sleep mode and this morning I got multiple BSODs in quick succession.

Personally, the first thing I would do, if you can get it to boot successfully, is to download and install Microsoft Security Essentials and run a scan on the system. This might not have anything to do with your problem.

If you can boot it, do you see any problems in Device Manager?

If you go into Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services, is Desktop Window... started?

Are all the fans running fine on your cpu and gpu?

Try reinstalling the motherboard drivers.

Eventually, it always boots, it just is always giving me the didn't shut down properly error and forcing me to choose how I want to boot Vista. Most of the time it even stays running without (visible) incident after that. Unless it doesn't. I'll try the suggest about MSE when I'm back at the computer later.

Well, there's a non-existant floppy drive the machine thinks exists, but nothing else that jumps out at me. I've disabled the floppy, but it is weird that it shows up.

If you go into Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services, is Desktop Window... started?

I'll check this later.

They seem to be.

I suggested reinstalling your mobo drivers since one of the logs says it doesn't recognize the driver for the Intel RAID controller (which would be on your mobo). It suggests that mobo drivers aren't up to date. That's as far into the logs as I got. You should also consider updating your BIOS.

I ignored the reference to the A drive in the logs since it shouldn't cause your BSODs.

Sorry for the delayed response, I ended up not being able to try out your suggestions until this evening. Flashing the BIOS and updating the driver seems to have done the trick ... at least for now.

Thanks for the help!
