"side-by-side configuration" error in Vista

I reviewed the forums and found a post that tells me how to fix this error, but I ran into a snag... The first step is to open an elevated command prompt. When I try to run that, I'm getting the same "side-by-side configuration" error that I'm trying to fix. Is there a way around running the sfc /scannow to fix this?

If you have .net framework 3.5 SP1, Go to Control Panel\Programs and Featues and find it. Click on it and select "uninstall". If will eventually give you the option to Repair or uninstall it. Click on Repair and reboot.

If you have .net framework 4, do the same thing.

This may fix the side by side error.
