How to fix my BSoD?

Hi,
I just got the BSOD and didn't manage to catch what the cause of the error was (it's my first time seeing a BSOD). I didn't restart in Safe Mode.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate with a 32-bit Operating System. I think it's an original installed OS, OEM version, but I'm not sure. I can't recall if the OS has been reinstalled. It says Copyright (C) 2007 - is this the age?

I managed to find the problem report, and attached is the .rar containing the BSOD and Perfmon files.

You only have 140 MB of available memory (with only 1 gB installed). Vista cannot run reliably on this little RAM, please upgrade to at least 2gB, with 4gB being preferred (as long as your motherboard is able to support it).

Your AVG antivirus is severely outdated. Please:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the antivirus software from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of the antivirus software using one of these free tools: Antivirus Uninstallers
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

Please visit the PC Manufacturer's website and update ALL of your drivers. You can see (in the table below) that many of the drivers are very, very old (those in RED)
Then please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

My Computer

Thanks for your reply. I sent my computer to a store to have them fix it (didn't want to risk messing things up even worse by myself). Apparently I had two different versions of Windows installed on my Local C and D drives so I had to reformat. I've upgraded to a 3GB RAM and gotten a new anti-virus software as well as upgraded my drivers.

Thank you so much again for your help!

Hi, it seems my BSoD problems are not over. Today I had two. The first one I couldn't catch the name of and the second was a "bad pool header". I noticed recently that Firefox kept crashing.

After I got the first one, I started in Safe Mode, then ran a Command Prompt as administrator and it says that the GameUXLegacyGDFs.dll file is corrupted (something to do with a hash mismatch?). I have since uninstalled Firefox. Then, as I was shutting down the computer, it gave me another blue screen, the bad pool header one.

I've attached the necessary files again. Any help would be greatly appreciated (:

You only have Service Pack 1 installed. Please install SP2: Read these notes for installing Vista SP2: Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

When installing drivers, please do it this way:
- download the fresh copy of the driver
- uninstall the current driver/software from your system
- then install the fresh copy
- monitor for further BSOD's

Chipset drivers date from 2007, please replace/update them. NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL

Your Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller (network controller) dates from 2006 and must be replaced. Broadcom.com - Ethernet NIC 4401 Driver Downloads

Your SigmaTel Audio Drivers date from 2007 and need to be replaced. See the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

My Computer

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the Broadcom driver, then uninstalled Broadcom using Control Panel > Programs and Features, is this correct or have I uninstalled the wrong thing?

I don't know how to reinstall the driver. The Broadcom website says I need a Broadcom Driver Installation Software. Where do I find this?

I am also having trouble with the NVIDIA driver, but I haven't uninstalled anything yet. Where should I save the downloaded files (for both these drivers) into?

I've also had two other BSODs today while running Windows Update, both were "Memory management". I've attached the .zip file again.

For the Broadcom device.
Extract the contents of the zip file by right clicking on it and selecting "Extract all" (remember where you save it to)
Then, in Device Manager, right click on the network device and select "Update driver software"
Then select the option that you have the software or to browse for the software.
Once you select the proper folder (where the new stuff is), then it'll install the devices.

If that doesn't work for you, then go to the PC Manufacturer's website and download their version (it may not be as current, but it should be easier).

The only place that you have to save the downloaded drivers is to a place that you'll remember.
When it installs, it'll install to Program Files or Program Files (x86) - but the installer does that for you (it may ask you to OK it).

The nVidia drivers should end in .exe - which means you can double click on it to start the installation.
Also update the audio drivers - then make sure that you have Service Pack 2 installed (that's critical)

My Computer

I tried updating to Service Pack 2, but halfway through the installation process, I got another Memory Management BSOD. Should I try updating again or can I fix this BSOD first?

I realised I forgot to attach the .zip. Here are both from after the second and after the third BSOD. (The one named 2b is from the second and 2c is from the third)

I'm also getting the "Superfetch has stopped working" notification. Should I be worried or can I also fix this?

Install the drivers first, then install any Windows Updates that you can get, then try Service Pack 2 again.

Try scanning for malware with one or two of these free antimalware programs/disks: http://www.carrona.org/malware.html
The 2 main reasons for service packs failing to install are:
- malware
- older drivers

Superfetch is likely related to the memory management BSOD's (and the fact that you only have 1 gB of RAM) - so we wait to see if it continues after updating everything.

My Computer

The NVIDIA application says that "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity, and try again." - This is the second time I've downloaded it, and I get the same error.

My Computer

System One

Try it one more time, then see if you can get an updated driver from the PC Manufacturer's website.

Most commonly, download errors that I've seen have been from malware infections. Since you're also having issues with Service Pack installation - please use a couple of the free tests from this link (in case your own protection has been corrupted by a virus): Free Online AntiMalware Resources

My Computer

After updating the Broadcom driver, it's still dated 2006. I also can't seem to find any update for the SigmaTel driver. The one on the Dell website is also dated 2007.

I'll try running one of the antimalware programs now.

I ran F-secure first, and it found and removed some spyware, then I used bitdefender, which didn't report any threats. I'm now running ESET, which is taking a lot longer than I expected, but so far it has found 3 threats, 2 of which are "a variant of Win32/InstallCore.D application" and one is "a variant of Win32/HackKMS.A application".

I left ESET to scan (still those 3 threats when I left it) and left the computer for about an hour, but when I returned, I found that I had another BSOD while I was away. I've attached the .zip again in case you want to have a look.

For the memory diagnostics, if I download the USB flash drive version, do I save it into a USB flash drive? And then run the Application from there?

I'd suggest reading the instructions and trying it.
I've never run the USB version myself.
I can't take the time to look it up right now as I'm getting ready to leave town for a family wedding.
I'll return on Sunday evening - post back then if you're still having troubles with the memtest.
