Hello all, I am new here and I really need your help. I have a Compaq computer running Vista and the OS will not load. I get the scrolling microsoft and then a blue screen flash and it restarts. I have done the following with the Vista DVD:
-System repair (could not automatically fix)
-System restore (could not successfully complete)
-CMD- Bootrec.exe (no fix)
- chkdsk /f /r (no fix)

I would like to know if there is a way to manually program the startup registry, however, I do not know the key strokes. Or anything else I can do?????Please help.

My Computer

How do you know that it's registry corruption (?report from Startup Repair?)
If it's registry corruption, startup repair and system restore can usually fix it.

It may be a hard drive issue. Please run a free bootable hard drive diagnostic from here: HD Diagnostic

Can you get into Windows at all? Maybe using Safe Mode?

My Computer

When I run the startup repair it says Corrupt registry but is unable to fix automatically. I tried system restore but it does not complete successfully. I am unable to boot in safe mode as it lags and then just rebbots.
I have run all diagnostics on hardware and all have come back PASS.

Ugh, I have been trying for days and with no luck. I really don't want to have to do a fresh install of the OS since I have so much on the computer.

My Computer

Have you tried all of the System Restore points? It may be that you can get one to work for you.
What hard drive diagnostic did you run?

You have to be able to boot into Vista in order to do a repair install - so that's out.

Try the command prompt option in startup repair - then use this command:
"chkdsk c: /r /f" (without the quotes)
Let us know what it says.

Beyond that, you're looking at a reinstall of Vista. That means you're going to have to do a backup before wiping the hard drive. If you have a lot on the drive, then you're going to need an external drive with plenty of space on it. Try a live Linux distro, or the Ultimate Boot CD to see if you can access the stuff that's on the drive. If you can, then you'll probably be able to copy it to an external drive before wiping the hard drive.

Good luck!

Have you tried all of the System Restore points?
Yes and none of them worked.

What hard drive diagnostic did you run?
I ran the complete diagnostics from the Vista DVD.

Try the command prompt option in startup repair - then use this command:
"chkdsk c: /r /f" (without the quotes)
Let us know what it says.
Did this 3X. It says successfully completed, but still no change.

The computer reboots, I see the microsoft and scroll bar, then a blue screen pops up for literally a sec (not long enough for me to read) and then it reboots again. I can get into CMD from the Vista DVD, but none of my commands seem to help the issue. I have a Harddrive to USB adapter and hopefully will be able to remove all and put on external drive (1TB) but I would rather not have to do that, if I can get around it. Is there anything else possible I can do?

As soon as the computer starts to boot start hitting F8 until you get the advanced start menu. Hit enter on disable automatic restart and then try to boot in safe mode.

I tried safe mode, but it stops it the middle and reboots. It never fully loads all the files and just lags and stops.
Do you think disabling the automatic restart would matter, if the files don't even load all the way?

My Computer

You said that you got a blue screen. Disable automatic restart would allow you to see the message however if it is freezing on safe mode yes it could help to know the last file listed.

Blue screen says:
C000021a fatal system error
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a staus of 0X00000000 (0xc0000001 0x001003f8).
The system has been shut down

In safe mode it stops on: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

And when I do a Startup repair it says: StartupRepairVProblem Signature1: AutoFailoverProblem Signature2: 6.0.6001.18000.6.0.6001.18000Problem Signature3: 6Problem Signature4: 2687016Problem Signature5: Corrupt RegistryProblem Signature6: Corrupt RegistryProblem Signature7: 3221225804Problem Signature8: 3Problem Signature9: RollbackRegistryProblem Signature10: 0

Yeah I'm reading that one possible cause is a corrupt registry. Unfortunately I think you tried all that you can. Sometimes it is easier and less time consuming to reinstall.

What sort of Vista DVD did you use to run the tests? Did it come from the PC Manufacturer? I've never seen a DVD from Compaq that offerred these tests (and I do have doubts about the inbuilt diagnostics on HP and Compaq systems).

Please run this free diagnostic anyway: HD Diagnostic

"Disable automatic restart on system failure" will stop the computer on the BSOD. You'll have to push the power button in order to shut it down, and then press it again to restart it.

My Computer

Unable to run that HD Diagnostic. The CD will not load at startup?? I tried it 4X with different CDs. The disk that only seems to load is the Vista DVD.

Questions:
If I do a custom install from the DVD it gives me the pop up that says "The partition you selected might contain files from previous Windows installation. If it does, these files and folders will be moved to a folder names Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you will not be able to use your previous version of Windows.

-Does that mean that my files will be saved? and if so how would I access after the install?
-Any other suggestions for the corrupt registry, before I do an installation??

My Computer

If you can't run a bootable hard drive diagnostic, then there's serious problems with your system.

The install will save stuff to Windows.old - so your files will be saved.
But none of your old programs will work.

My Computer

Its not that the diagnostic will not run, its that the cd will not play. I think it might be because its a writeable cd. All the other CDs work, I think it might me because its a writeable one.

So do you suggest I do an install? Where would me old files be stored?
I HATE THIS!!! This has been an ongoing issue and I want to friggen scream!!
