Display Unit keeps freezing and dieing, and then it is difficulty to restart

For the past week I've experienced this problem. It's happened 3 times. My laptop display will freeze, start flashing and then go black. The computer doesn't actually shutdown however. In the instances where I've been listening to something when this has happened the audio starts skipping as well. When I restart the pc, the user accounts menu screen is just bright blurry colours and sometimes criss crossed lines. I have to restart it several times to get to the account screen showing up correctly. Even then, when I try to go into an account the display unit freezes again. Eventually when I'm able to get into a user account the same thing will happen as soon as I open an application. When I used Safe Mode toget into accounts there are no problems however. I had to restart my laptop tentimes this morning before I could get into an account normally without it freezing.

I thought this might be happening due to over-activity on the computer originally but in the last instance it happened while I was shutting down with only one application left open. In all instances I've had the laptop on for at least anhour. Also, internet explorer has always been open when it's happened.

I'd really appreciate any help with this. It's bad enough that the computer keeps freezing but to then take 40 minutes to restart it properly again is just ridiculous.

Systemspecs: Windows Vista Home Premium 2007, Service Pack 2

    MemoryRAM: 2.00 GB

    Processor:Intel ® Core 2 Duo CPU processor T7300 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz

    Systemtype: 32-bit operating system

    ManyThanks

    Welcome to the forum.

I'm thinking this may be heat related. I suggest downloading gpu-z, and set it up to monitor AND log the temperature of the video card.

What make and model is your laptop?
Have you tried to clean out the dust bunnies from inside?

No. Does that actually have an effect on the computer's functioning, because I've been told before that it shouldn't?

I have an 8930G and need to clean it atleast once a year.
I opened it up once and found 1/4in of dust clogging the fan exhaust. It was so bad, my computer as shutting off.

I've done a quick search, and found the service manual, so you could look through it and see if you are comfortable popping open the back and clean it out.

My 8930G is 8 or 10 screws qand the panel pops off.

I finally managed to pop it open yesterday. I only removed the panel that covers the fan area though. Also I didn't actually remove the box that covers the fan. Through the gaps on the fan box though, I did remove dust that was wrapped around the propellor. Since doing that I've definately noticed that GPU-Z is registering the GPU temperature as being much lower than what it previously was. Before it was around 75-78 C when I was streaming video. Now it stays at about 66-68C. I'll see if this stops the problem.

Okay well it's still happening. I was testing the temperature yesterday by playing many videos at the same time and the temperature never went above 72c. I leave the computer not doing anything for half and hour, then start to shut down all the internet windows and suddenly it freezes. I checked the temperature just before and it was only 69c. I don't think the temperature can be the problem if it's okay when multiple high quality videos are playing but then freezes when nothings running.
