    dell inspiron 1720 with black screen

    Hi all
    Initially launching windows result in error message ,"NTLDR is missing" as The recovery repair feature couldn't help, we opted for more radical solution nd rebuilt the bootloader using the prompt command from scratch. Now when rebooting screen start loading nd then go blank with cursor..when I press the Dell media command "MD PARTITION MISSING" comes up...
    I m trying to avoid reinstalling vista nd loosing my personal files so any advice to help reboot my laptop or somehow safeguard my files would be very much appreciated.

    Reading your post indicates that your primary concern is your files. Back them up with Ubuntu. If you cannot install Ubuntu it probably means that you have hardware problems. The only way to safeguard your stuff would be to remove the Hard Drive and put in another computer.

    Anything done to fix a Black Screen may cause loss of your documents. Lets save your stuff, first.

    Wow! Sounds so easy I wonder why no one of the "guru" I v asked had come up with it...I will try once I get hold of my freind laptop...thanks so much for your quick reply.
