    Error loading operating system.

    Hello,
    My computer recently decided to stop booting normaly and to load a black screen with "error loading operating system". The computer was running fine beforehand but I have a hunch it is something to do with my Motherboard rather then my windows installation.

    My computer specs are as follows;
    Operating System- Windows Vista 32bit
    Motherboard- Asus M4A77TD Pro
    Processor- AMD Phenom II x4 840 @3.2Ghz
    Ram- 4 Gb
    Hard drive- SATA SS Samsung HD103SJ

    Now i have tried to boot from a copy of vista CD to use the command prompt to fix the MBR but it will no longer boot from the cd. It would at first but because my computer clearly dosent want me to fix it, it has decided to stop booting from the CD.

    Now when i say it wont boot: it will boot into the loading screen where it says it is loading the files on the cd with the loading bar. Once that completes it goes to the microsoft loading screen as if it was starting up and then instead of going to the installation/recovery page it just loads a black screen and stays there. Nothing else will happen.



    I have absolutly no idea how to get around this so im wondering whether my hard drive has really just died completly or whether my Motherboard is extremly corrupt. And yes the boot priority is set to boot from CD 1st.

    Your help is really really appreciated!

    Why do you suspect your motherboard? Often it's the owner's "hunch" that solves these sorts of problems, so it's important to know why.

    Meanwhile, let's start with these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
    If you still can't boot from the disk, then try removing both cables from the hard drive and seeing if you can then run the memory diagnostic (this sometimes happens when a hard drive is dead/dying).

    Okay,
    I removed both cables from the hard-drive and i can now succesfully boot into the vista cd.Tried booting with cd as first priority and it still wont boot but i can however runthe memory diagnostics.

    I ran the memory diagnostics as suggested and came up with no results, said everything was fine. This is sounding like my hard drive is dead or badly corrupt.

    If you can't run the memory test with the hard drive installed, but you can run it without the hard drive - then it must be the hard drive that's the problem.

    Purchase a new hard drive from a store that will allow you to return it.
    A new hard drive will cost around $100 (US), and you can install a fresh copy of Windows on it.
    If it still doesn't work, then return the drive and get your money back.
