Instant freeze on boot

I have recently tried to update Java, I think it was. Come to turn on my machine today and it never gets past the VERY first black boot screen.

The suggested options of F2 and F12 do nothing (so it appears to freeze before their input is accepted).

Even the USB is still deactivated cos it won't charge my phone.
Also early enough in the boot process to not recognise a boot CD.

Any ideas folks ?

Also, I have Dell Inspiron 530S and I know this is a 64bit forum but you guys are so helpful, even to us 32bit folk ;o)

Although it might sound like hardware more than likely something is wrong with Windows. Are you sure that all you did was update java? It sound to me like your only option is a repair install. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

That requires the Vista dvd. If you don't have that you might just have to do a restore. Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings | Dell Either way I strongly suggest that first you put your hard drive in another computer and backup your files or use a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, to backup your files to a external hard drive or a large USB drive.

Thanks for the help, Towns.

The good news is that i have 2 hard drives, one for programs and one for files, so i wont lose anything by restoring C: to factory settings (except time, with the painstaking job of reinstalling everything).

The bad news is that the problem occurs before the system recognises a bootable CD, therefore will not run the repair /restore program. But after searching high and low, I do have the reset DVD.

Thanks again

UPDATE - after removing all peripherals except mouse and keyboard, strangely has allowed access to CMOS (to reset the first boot drive) and therefore access to the boot disk.

Updates not really for additional help purposes for my needs, just added info for others in the future if thu have same problem.

One of the things that you removed is most likely the cause of your problems.
Try putting them back in - one at a time - and see which one causes the system to stop responding.

Good luck and thanks for keeping us informed!
