BSOD when trying to shutdown - ntoskrnl.exe

    Hello everyone.

I need to ask for some advice on solving a BSOD error I'm experiencing.
When I shut down my laptop, the screen will go black for about 10 minutes, then eventually reboot. The only way to actually shut down is to hold down the power button during the 'black screen' phase. After the laptop reboots, it will say that Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown, or words to that effect.

After some troubleshooting, BlueScreenView indicates a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error, caused by ntoskrnl.exe (ntoskrnl.exe+cdabf), however I am not sure what to do next, and to how to go about fixing this safely.

I have performed a Memory Test and no errors came up.

Any advice on resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

    System Info:
    Vista x86 (32 bit)
    Original OS, Home Premium w/SP2
    OEM
Hardware is approx 5 years old
OS installation 5 years old (same as hardware)

    Welcome
Hopefully we can solve your BSOD problem, quickly. It appears that the problem is caused by
    Stwrt.sys file description
This is a driver that is a component of
IDT PC Audio. It is manufactured bye IDT INC. Either go to the website and update the driver or remove the applicable software.

Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated.

The IDT PC Audio driver seems to be part of my "Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec" so I tried removing and then updating that driver. The laptop shut down properly a few times, but now the problem is back. Any ideas how else I could solve this? If I remove the driver and don't reinstall it I'll have no sound...!
