Cant open folders in Vista

Hi everyone,

I am running on vista home 32 bit. For a few days now, I have had trouble opening certain folders (mostly my photos). When I click on a folder it opens but stays on for about 1/2 sec. and closes again; my desktop icons disapear for about 2 sec. and reapear again. This has now reached an extreme where I cant open any folders or even the start menu. As a result I cant run a system restore in the normal way. I have tried opening my computer in safe mode and the problem still remains.

Does anyone know how to run a system restore in a different way?

Any feedback or suggestions is greatly welcomed

Hi Chittop2.

Since you can't enter system restore, theres a possibility that you have a minor virus.

Try running a free scan using malwarebytes.

As suggested by Windows 8, you need to perform a scan to remove malwarebytes from your computer. The problem you described is caused by malware.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded the malwarebytes software and it did find some viruses. However on rebooting my computer the problem still remains. I cant access anything from the start menu or any folders on my desktop.

Any other ideas?

Make a full anti virus scan with your AntiVirus, if the problem is Malware it may be caught by the Anti Virus
If that does not reveal anything, go back with System Restore at least 2 weeks before the problem began. You must go back far enough to make sure you do not get the virus, again.

Hi Richard,

The problem is that although my antivirus launches on start up, I cant access it through my desktop as I cant seem to open any files or links. Similarly I cant do a system restore as I dont know how to access this without going through the start menu. I can open the start menu, but it closes as soon as I try to access any of the folders it closes. It is as if my desktop icons and task bar are frozen

Any idea how to get around this?

Not sure why, but my computer wont let me download the software. I am having difficulty accessing much aside from Explorer on my computer and this is only after rebooting. Obviously the virus has already done some fairly serious damage.

Hi chittop2

After reading your replies, I suggest you to re boot your system and install a good antivirus program on your computer as the first software.
