Computer Freezing repeatedly

Hello everyone, new to the forum.
Recently my latop (sony Vaio) froze repeatedly after about 5 minutes after starting up. I tried fixing it by clearing my "Windows event logs" using a batch command i found on this forum. I followed that up by running "sfc/scannow" 3 times as instructed. I ran CHKDSK after a clean boot and lastly i also ran a full scan using malwarebytes program. HOWEVER, now after about a few hours, my laptop still freezes, this time without any mouse movement. I also noticed that if i close the screen and let my laptop hibernate, it will also freeze a little while after starting up.

I'm drawing complete blanks as to why this is happening. Please help!

*I noticed that after running the command prompt for clearing windows event logs, all the files get cleared (not deleted) but 2 remain untouched. one is named "MSFWSVC.evtx" and its 1,092kb. The other files is named "Windows OneCare.evtx" and this one is 1,028kb.

Welcome
Boot the computer in safe mode and let us know if the problem persisits. From your post, I will assume that the problem is still present after a clean boot.

If safe mode does not help, let us know and then follow these steps.
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

Hi Rich, thanks for the quick response!
quick question though, if there is a problem, does the yellow warning automatically appear in the device manager b/c all i'm seeing when i open the device manager is a collapsible list of my computer components with nothing highlighted yellow?

Also, how do i make sure my power supply unit is working properly? I'm pretty green when it comes to this stuff.

The yellow marker means that the driver is defective, so I guess no yellow is good. Its bad only in that we did not find the problem yet. BTW, good luck with your research. Keep us posted with progress or questions.
We will get to the hardware portion after we are sure that it is not software, I am leaning toward software.

Couldn't perform the memtest86 b/c the cd drive on laptop is old and decrepit but managed to perform everything else. Ran the sfc/scannow a couple more times, and each time the results said that there were some files that would be fixed upon rebooting. So far it has been 9 hours since my laptop froze. Maybe it's okay now? I'll check back in if there are any further complications. Thanks for your help everyone!

Memest can be run on a usb stick if your laptop supports that.
