KSOD when changing user

I am running Vista Home Basics, 32 bit, SP2, and have often the following problem.

When I log in as a normal user (not admin) and log-out or choose `switch user` I get a Black Screen of Death, in which the screen is 100% black. Not even a mouse pointer can be seen. The ONLY way out is to push the power button long enough to initiate a shut down (without switching off the PC).

This behavior is just for one user, and it does not happen all the some. Sometimes the log-off and/or change user just works as expected (black screen for a very short time, then I see the user selection screen).

Anything I can try to fix this problem? I also do not know what is so special about this one user, or what I need to do to reproduce this behavior...

Sounds like either a corrupt profile, or a program running in the background is hanging and blocking exit.

Check Event Viewer Application log and see if that gives any clues.

I tried to use the Event Viewer, and assuming I have done it correctly, I did not find any Warning or Error this happened last time (i.e. black screen of death when changing user).

Anything else I can try, or keys I can press during the 'blackout' (CTRL-ALT-DELETE does not work either)?

OK
I'll take a look and see...
Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

You have a lot of Userprofile errors on shutdown - and they are not the usual ones from the Windows Live system. It's probably these which are causing instability. I have to go out, so please note the following comments, and respond so that I can deal with them when I get back (or maybe tomorrow)

I suspect that there is a problem with Avira, or with the dregs of any previous AV installed - you also appear to have Windows Defender running alongside Avira. You should check whether Avira supports this configuration, as many AV's will automatically switch WD off to prevent conflicts.

Your Pinnacle and ViewPoint service installations are having major problems - the relevant files appear to be missing.

Hi,

thank you very much for your analysis, but I might not be able to fix the problems I have with the programs you mentioned - I don't even know I have ViewPoint installed or what.

I have a rather trivial solution: I just created a second account for the same user, and install/copy those programs/data I need, and so far the KSOD did not appear for this new user. Once I have used the new user for a long time I delete the first user.
