No acces pressing F8

Hi there

I am sitting with a friends HP preloaded with Vista Home Premium.
It is stuck after downloading an update.

Problem is, if I hit F8 when booting nothing happens. Black screen forever.
I tried with a recovery CD from Neosmart. But the HP bypasses it, - goes to 'configuring 1 og 3 - 0% done (forever).

HELP PLEASE!!

So when you turn your computer on all you get is a black screen? Does it beep?

If I do nothing - after a while it shows the 'configuring....'
If I press F8 - black screeen
If I press esc or F10 it beeps and restarts
It bypasses a recover disc like it isn't there

No checksum. No DOS-like text what so ever! ??

The ubuntu that is....
The HP reads the disc when I boot it with a Vista recover (Neosmarts), but then continues to 'configure...' like just another day at the office :)
Will try booting with ubuntu tonight

YES - Oh mothers...
Ubuntu did the job. It failed to install alongside Vista, but runs painlessly alongside from DVD-boot.
My friend can rescue his files, and now it is no problem to rename the trouble-making files or what-ever.
I think I am in love with this openminded, trustworthy and cheap OS :)
