ok.. Here's the deal. I have a brand new like 2 months old HP desktop PC. I don't usually use USB ports that often, and I didn't own a printer. The Bluetooth USB thing didn't work cuz wasn't vista compatable.. and other then that I haven't really worried about it.. now I am. NONE of the USB ports seem to work. When I plug things in, they make the sound so I know they are recieving something. Windows even does the Automatic install for drivers or what not. But nothing works. Neither of my USB flash drives work. The new one with U3, with and without the vista driver update, My old one before that doesn't work either. Also I have not gotten a Printer. When I plug it in, (to ANY of the USB ports, 3 on front and 5 on back) I have tried every port and none work. Every single one I plug it into recognizes that I've plugged something into a USB port. and they all do the Windows Automatic Install.. but it still doesn't work. I've updated all the drivers from online and from the HP site for the Printer, and when I run install shield It stops when It's supposed to Recognize the Printer, but when it says plug in USB cable it never recognizes that I've plugged it in. Windows notices I plus it in. and it installs.. but still doesn't work. so my printer doesn't work. and none of my flash drives work.. if anyone has ANY Idea's I'm completely open at the moment. I just want something to work for once without a hassle on vista... basically.. so PLEASE HELP!... thx

/Cory

Sounds like the motherboard drivers are not installed or have been overwritten by an update. Reinstall your motherboard drivers and see if this solves the problem.

ok.. ya It's possible that an update messed something up becuase if I remember they used to work i think. and now when I plug my printer in, It prompts me to get 2.0 because It's faster and the generic plug I am plugged into is not working at full speed. so it's saying they are generic. But I kno they are 2.0

So I kno a lil, but not that much. How would I update or reinstall the Motherboard Drivers?? Thx for ur reply!

If you have the cd to the motherboard you can reinstall the drivers from there. Just run the installation cd. Failing that go to the website for your motherboard and download the drivers, then go into device manager and update or run the software you downloaded. If you give the spec of your computer I will be able to help more.
You can try a restore to a point before the USB failed to work, this may help.

Well, ya I kno how to look up and install the Drivers and what not, but I'm not sure how to find out what kind of motherboard I have. I don't have like something way nice and everything. It's a HP 6009n I believe. with NVidea GeForce 6150, 2.4 Ghz, 1G DDR Ram, 250 GB drive. I'm not on it or I would tell you more.. How do I find out witch motherboard and model I have so I can update.. and I do actually have the box with everything, So I'm sure there is probably the disk in there.. I've done a system restore. I did a windows automatic update about 3 weeks ago after my comp had been turned off for almost 3 weeks while moving. after the automatic update i restarted after the Prompt. and it prompted me to restart again.. weird I kno. but I did and it crashed during reboot and wouldn't turn on. I did system restore to restore computer to a previous time and it works. not sure waht updates they were, but looks like Microsoft should be more careful.. unless it was something else.. I've had a few problems since then but I don't think the USB's worked before that anyways.. so ya. Motherboard.. info, How.. lol. k thx again..

OK I figured out what brand the Mobo is and everything. I ended up getting on HP's tech support talking to someone live and after everything they sent me to a web site to install a driver set for my computer from the Nvidea website.. The support guy said it would fix my USB problems. So I downloaded and installed.. after install completed it prompted me to restart computer. after I did and the changes took affect it prompted to restart again, and when i hit ok it crashed. The update for my drivers from the driver manufactures website crashed my comp. I still can't use my USB ports and I don't kno what to do. No printer, no flash drives, no using Ipod. I'm pretty much ready for it to just work.. everything was just fine until VISTA came around. it seems like everything needs a hotfix or a update or 3 hours of work for everything to work like it used to.. Getting very old. Anyone have idea's on getting my USB ports to work PLEASE let me kno. I have a HP Pavilion Desktop a6009n with 3 USB ports in front and i think 2 or 3 in back and none work.. they make sound when I plug something in. and even do auto install if it's something new.. but it doesn't work.. so they partly do there job. not enough to help me.. sadness I kno. PLEASE HELP!!!

Here bud, try this. Let me know if this helps you out:

This is most likely caused by a corrupted INFCACHE.1 file. This file stores the location of drivers and their INF files. This file is hidden, has restricted access, and can be found in “c:\windows\inf”. Resolution: Delete the INFCACHE.1 file and it will force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1 file the next time Windows searches for drivers. To delete this file, you have to set the security permissions of it to allow Full Control for the User Group Administrators or full control for your user account. Please follow the directions below:

1. Open a Windows Explorer window by right clicking on Start and then clicking on Explore.
2. In the address bar, type C:\windows\inf and press Enter.
3. Find and then right click on the file named INFCACHE.1.
4. Select Properties.
5. Click on the Security tab.
6. Click on Edit to edit the permissions of the file.
7. Click on Add to add User Groups.
8. Type Administrators in the User Groups field and click on OK.
9. Set Administrators to Full Control and click on OK.
10. Move or delete the file INFCACHE.1.
11. Reinstall a device to force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1 file (DO NOT reinstall the same external hard drive that you were having issues detecting before. Please connect another USB device other than the one that Vista had an issue detecting).

This detection issue can happen several times in a row, but repeat the steps 1-11 and try again until this works.
