hi hope this is the right area for this .srry if it isnt.
i have vista 64 and ive been trying to install intels 8.3.1.1009 chipset drivers(inf) .
ive tried downloading from intel and gigabyte. same version which "DOES SUPPORT VISTA 64"
problem is , it runs the installation process ok but after reboot i check device manager and the same drivers are there? it doesnt seem to want to install the newer drivers?
the older drivers are outdated so i need the newer versions since i do like to overclock.
why wont vista allow the package to install?
is there a way around this problem?
gigabyte told me its a vista issue and a common one. and that i have to contact microsoft for an answer .
anyway have a fix for this?
if so id luv to hear from u .
thanks adya.

Try uninstalling the old devices and deleting the software drivers before updating.

1 Download drivers.
2 Go into device manager and uninstall saying yes to delete software.
3 Update drivers point the install path to where you downloaded the drivers.

Hope this helps.

hi , thanks for the reply.
ok just some quick questions if thats ok.
firstly theres alot of intel drivers in device manager , ie "intel ich8" drivers. over 20 actually. So do i uninstall all of them? basically every driver thats named intel ich8? or should i uninstall every driver titled "intel"?
i just want to be sure im uninstalling the right drivers.
i have tried running the installer as admin ,makes no difference.
i also turned windows update off so windows cant reinstall the stupid old drivers.
in regards to wrong thread ? should i of posted this somewhere else? ive being trying to solve this for mnths now and i cant get an answer anywhere . ive even had a two techs out and they couldnt solve it , they just said vista is **** and go back to xp.
i want to give vista one more go if i cant solve this then ok ill go back to xp.
thanks again .

Post a screen shot of your device manager with all devices shown. I think there is a way to get system information to show this. Why are you trying to update your motherboard drivers? Just saying they are old is not much of an answer. Are any of them failing? If so you only need to change the ones that are failing.

hi thanks for the reply.
chipset drivers are 2006 . i do overclock my cpu /fsb/dram so i try to keep my drivers upto date.
there are much newer versions of these chipset drivers available now.

would i have to manually go threw each ich8 driver and uninstall it?

My Computer

Look at the version number on each driver. You will only need to update the drivers which are out of date / updated. I doubt that will be all of the drivers as some will not have changed. A release of new drivers may contain some old drivers just so the set of drivers released is complete.
I dont tend to update a driver unless there is a problem or a BIG difference in performance / stability.
Is your compter running slowly? Is it having stability errors?
List your system specs with how much you have overclocked your system relative to its normal speed.

yes im having problems overclocking with 4x1gb ram. i know some people had this issue until they updated chipset drivers. has something to do with memory hub controller.
i now use 2x1gb and it overclocks at these settings . although its sandra /memtest stable . theres still some issues. bf2 crashes some apps crash now and then.
my plan was to update chipset drivers , and try overclocking with 4x1gb modules. since vista cant run games well with 2gb.itll run them but slugish. runs well with 4gb though.

in regards to "updating the drivers that are out of date" .there all out of date all 2006 ?
what if i reinstalled vista and ran the chipset driver utility before installing any other drivers? do u think it would work then?i guess it would have to be a clean install as well?
also with my xp installation , i didnt uininstall any drivers i just ran the utility . any idea why vista wont allow that? its kind of weird i think.drivers do need to be updated as new software and hardware is released frequently.
thanks again. adya.

My Computer

Try in safe mode, if the driver is in use and required for the system to run you will have problems.
A clean install with the chipset drivers should do the trick. Just make sure windows does not update them itself.
