Vista Business (x32) DVD drives disappear when new software is installed

Every time I install any new software on my Dell Precision 690 Workstation (OS-Vista Business x32) the DVD drives disappear. I have installed all recent updates for Windows Vista. When I check my Device Manager, both DVD drives have errors.

The DVD drive models are as follows:
DVD #1: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H53N ATA Device
DVD #2: TSST Corp DVD-ROM TS-H352C ATA Device

The device status message for both is:
The device cannot start. (Code 10)

When I attempt to update the drivers it tells me that the driver software for my device is up to date.

When I click on the "Check for solutions..." button it does NOTHING!!!

ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Frustrated in CO,

You are not the only person with this problem.

My laptop cannot read any CD's, it will sound like it's loading it up but then nothing!

I get the same exact message as what you do:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit)
120GB Hard-drive
1GB RAM
My DVD/CD-ROM drive: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560A ATA Device

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
Chris

Copy this and paste it into something like notepad. Save as anything you choose to call it but with the handle reg. run it and it will ncorporate the changes needed into your registry:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

I attempted your fix and received the following error message:

Cannot import C:\Desktop\dvd.reg: the specified file is not a registry script.
You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Again, I am not a "power user", but had a friend attempt as well via CrossLoop and he said he thought the file was malformed. Any additional help and/or clarification you can provide woudl be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

My Computer

OK. Sorry. It worked for me. Anyway, ask your friend to do, what the above should have done, manually.

1. Click "Start"->"Run", type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click "OK".
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight this key, on the right pane, and then check if the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.

Step 3: Remove the CDROM driver:

1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter".

2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives".

3. Right click your CDROM Drive, and click "Uninstall".

4. Reboot the client.

Dave,

Thanks again for the post. Your initial reply worked, once I actually copied the very first instruction:

"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"

As I previously stated, I am far from a "power user", but another friend helped me out via CrossLoop. Your solution worked :D

Thank you for your help - I GREATLY appreciate it.

You made the following (and nothing more and nothing less) into a .reg file from Notepad?

Code:

sorry if this thread is kind of dead, but I'm having a similar problem with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
but in my case ALL regestry keys are MISSING
I use a R70 Samsung Laptop (which too many people handle with too much freedom...), WinVista Home Premium
Curiously enough my cd drives work (more or less) but appear as "unkown" in the task manager, and I'm unable to install the correct drivers...
any insight?
THX!

I have NEC Versa Laptop, few days back suddenly my DVD drive was disapeared, I tried with registry editor, and deleted "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values, but it didn't help. it remain disappeared.

Then i removed "Magic Disk" (Virtual Drive) from my PC , this action restored my original DVD drive.
Later i installed "Magic Disk" again, now both drive (Original and Virtual) are working fine.
