HP deskjet OK direct connection by not via network share
permalink
I have a HP deskjet 5550 printer connected to a XP pro (32 bit), it is shared. I have no problem using this shared printer either from the local XP machine or another XP machine. I had no problem using the share when I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit installed. However the Vista Ultimate 64 bit gives an error stating the server does not have the correct drivers, and requests that I supply and inf file.

Searching the HP web site they state the vista already has the drivers. I connect direct using a USB cable and can print without issue. Even after that no luck connecting via a share.

How can i solve this problem ?

Just so that I can get a complete picture... are all PC's laptops or desktops?

Vista should have the driver that is correct.

I'm assuming that the Vista machine can see the other PC's in the network. Is the network working?

I'll also assume the Printer is connected to the main desktop machine?

As you can see you haven't really given us much information to go by.

Hello,

They are all desktop machines. They are all connected in a network and visible. The printer is connected with usb at the xp prof. 32 bit machine and is shared. The ultimate 64 bit machine is also connected in this network. So I want to print from the ultimate 64 bit machine with the printer connected to the xp prof 32 bit machine.

Now I've soved the problem. I have downloaded the beta drivers 64 bit (xp) from the HP site, and installed them. Its working correctly.

Thank you for your attention.

Greetings

All I was able to find was this page:
Installing the Printer Driver Located in Windows Vista

However, I've found that when you're sharing a printer from an XP computer you have to install the drivers on Vista to get it to work. When I was running my old XP system I just had to fidn the network printer and hit OK, but not anymore.

It looks to me like there isn't a driver, all you need to do is follow the guide to get your printer working.

Hey,

I found the file with the x64dot4.inf file in it on another website, since HP's website does not host it anymore. I thought I would share it with you.
I was having the exact same problem (HP 5550 printer conected through USB to an XP machine, and I wanted to print via my wireless router from a vista x64 laptop), and this fixed it for me!

1. Download the windows XP 64bit file from HP Deskjet 5550 Printer Driver Download (it works under vista!)

2. It will be a file called "90.exe". Unzip it completely to a folder with winrar.

3. Go to the "printers" menu under control panel, and add a network printer. Locate the HP 5550 and click next. It will tell you it cannot install it. Direct the setup to the folder you just unzipped, and use the x64dot4.inf file.

4. Let it install. It will say it cannot verify the drivers manufacturer or something. Click install anyway.

5. You're done! Happy printing :)
