Just bought a buncha new parts to rebuild my machine, and realized that I ordered the x64 vista ultimate edition... now im freakin cause all i hear are horror stories about x64 vista...especially with my xfi fatal1ty sound card... is there light at the end of the tunnel? or should I go shoot myself now??? ok...wrong place...this is an enthusiast forum...but will it work?

My Computer

Just added sig with system specs...

also...is x64 worth it if im merely a gamer? i do have 4gb of ram im throwin in that sucker, but is it worth it?

My Computer

Should be okay. With the extra ram, it's nice.

I'm running an XtremeGamer (the cheaper one :(), and it works just fine. Mostly what I do with my machine is play TF2 and COD4. You can see my specs, so that should give you a bit of an idea.

There are people who will tell you plenty of bad things about Vista here, so don't worry. You'll be fine. If you need help along the way, just post and let us know.

I have 64bit...I'm enjoying it more as I learn more about the OS.

I play games and do a fair chunk of Video Editing

64bit is the way ahead.
Q6600 will overclock nicely but I have not bothered. System is fast at stock speeds. :p

i dont know if i have all that room on my power supply to overclock anyway... im pushing it as is using a 550w antec, but according to antec's power calculator, ive got about 100w of leeway with this system...will get a larger one soon anyway though...just doesnt feel all that great :D

The worst part of my Vista 64 experience is the annoyance from having to listen to all of the individuals who apparently feel it's their 'Grand Mission In Life' to tell me about all of the things that (supposedly) don't work, then having to explain to them that ...it *does* work, because I just *did* that..., and then finding they refuse to believe it. Even after I *show* them.

Besides that?? It works fine, and has run everything I've put on it. UAC is annoying, but after installing SP1 it makes it's presence known less often. So meh...

64 bit works like a dream.....so much tosh out there about compatibility - IMHO, too many variables involved. I was worried before I installed but it was completely unfounded.

64 bit vista is rock solid for me.

ty all for your reassurance. I had actually talked to Newegg and they were willing to bend their policy and do an exchange for me, but after hearing from you and others who have told me that they regret not having upgraded to x64 when they had the chance, I decided to stick with the 64 bit version. All OSes have probs, but it seems that x64 is not broken beyond repair as I was led to believe. I imagine I may be posting more here as I learn vista (I should be getting all my parts tomorrow...so excited :D)

As you are building your own system you will find it better than a mass produced system running Vista. Mass produced system is where alot of probs seem to crop up from, or people trying to upgrade thier sinclair spectrum to run vista:).

When I was shopping for a new system the hardest decision was which OS. I'm happy with my choice.

Though like you I read nothing but critisism then realised when I checked the date of the read article they were more than 6 months old.

x64 Vista is great and the way to go. I've not really had any problems with it and any that I have encountered have been easily solved. Stick with it, you will enjoy. As for running games on it, workd fine for my Crysis looks very good and runs smoothly.
