Generic Volume Driver

Hello guys.

Every single USB flash drive worked perfectly so far, no problems at all. Until now, no matter what drive I connect, Vista does not seem to recognise it. Device manager states that the best generic volume driver is already installed but I can see the exclamation mark indicating wrong driver being installed... I think I've tried every single trick to uninstal/reinstall/fix the driver. Nothing has helped.

I am asking you for help now as I am out of ideas and have no fclue of what should I do.

Re: Generic Volume Driver

Hello xMichael, Try system restore back a few days it should make vista use the correct driver...If your still having issues I remember an old command to make device manager to show all installed "ghost devices" that maybe causing a conflict.

Re: Generic Volume Driver

Helo dmex, thank you for your reply, I did try the system restore to a point where no programs were installed. Unfortunatelly it didn't help. Could you be so kind and post the command please?

Thank you

Re: Generic Volume Driver

go to the Control Panel System applet, then the Advanced tab and open the Environmental Variables sub-window.
Then create a new "user variable" devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and assign it a value 1, that's it now you'll see all the "ghost devices" listed under Device Manager.

Try removing them and see if you have any luck...

Did you ever find a way to fix this as I have the same problem. My 4gb Readyboost USB Drive is not showing in the drive list anymore. System restore doesnt go far enough back to rectify it.

It shows under Computer Managements/Disk Management without a drive letter, if I try and give it a letter I get the error "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management Console failed etc blah... click refresh" but if I do nothing happens and I get the error again.

I've installed something maybe that has caused it. If I connect my Sandisk card reader same thing, "Generic Volume" appears in Device Manager with a /!\.

Not sure what else to try.

Re: Generic Volume Driver

2 points of interest:

  1. When you put that option in the environment variables, then it is there for the remainder of that installation - which in and of itself is not a 'harmful' thing, but it can also be accomplished for a single session, using the instructions from Device Manager does not display devices that are not connected to the Windows XP-based computer
  2. When you have that enabled, in Device Manager you still need to go to View --> Show hidden devices to make it work correctly.
Varkanoid - have you perchance disabled readyboost?

no and in any case it would still show up as a plain old 4gb USB drive plus the Sandisk card reader is nothing to do with readyboost I use it for the 2gb card from my digital camera.

Something I have installed recently is affecting it and its bugging me like mad.

Re: Generic Volume Driver

Actually, readyboost *does* have the ability to use card readers as well.

Can you pinpoint when this started, and perhaps see if there is an update in Windows Update that corresponds to the time when this started happening?

I know. I did say I use it for my camera card hence "is nothing to do with readyboost"....

(to not sidetrack the original question what temps on idle do you get on your cores with the Tuniq ?)

Been trying to uninstall programs I can remember installing recently but I do not know the exact time/date it was like this, just noticed it today. Will have to keep trying things I suppose, thanks anyway.
