Mouse & Keyboard don't work in Vista?

Vista Ultimate 32bit isn't recognising my mouse or keyboard on boot. They both work in bios, the setup cd, and ubuntu Linux, on the same PC. This all started when I had to repartiton my drive - I moved the partition vista was on to the start, and deleted a partion i had there. When I tried to boot after doing this, it said there was no bootmanager present, so I put in the vista update disk and that fixed it. Windows booted as normal, but now, when it gets to the login screen, the keyboard and mouse do not work. They are not USB, they are enabled in BIOS, I've tried a hard reset, and I have tried in safe mode. Someone please help.

You know what you have to do, but you don't want to. I have faced this dilemma myself.
You have to reinstall Vista correctly after you partition. Sorry, you can't get around it, the KB/mouse thing is only the beginning of your problems if you don't.

Hi

I can't quite get exactly how you did this partition change, please explain. For one, how did you change the partitions that were there, and what do you mean that you "moved the partition that vista was on to the front"?

I guess what I'm asking in a way is...did you copy or move the vista installation files onto another partition that you made? If so, you can't just do that and expect things to work. The reason it didn't boot the first time (if you did the above) is that the boot partition offset was changed and when you had the Vista DVD find and repair this info it partially fixed the problems you caused if you did the above as I think you did.

An Operating System has to be "installed" onto a partition and not just "moved" onto one, just like "hkancyr" pointed out earlier, but I just wanted you to clarify exactly what you did so we can understand better what problems you'll have. Can you explain in detail what you did in your moves?

Excuse my bad grammer and lack of sense in that first post, it was late. I used gparted to move my partition, which was at the end of my drive, to the start, deleting the partition that was there.

Am I really going to have to reinstall windows? It's just that I only just did. Can I just move this data to the end of my drive, create a new one at the start, install windows there, then copy all my data back? I really can't be bothered to reconfigure and reinstall everything.

Cheers,
Kieron

EDIT:

You have to reinstall Vista correctly after you partition.

This is what I have just done - the reason why I was resizing and deleting the old partition, that was first. This is what started all my problems...

EDIT2:

I've just looked in GParted, and I think I've seen something strange.

It says that my first disk is sda2. I'm no expert, but shouldn't the first partition be sda1?

Maybe if I do this:

then it might work again, because that's how it was before...? I'll attempt it now, as it takes a while. I'll post back my result.

Not really. There is always a reserved section at the start of every HDD for the MBR and MFT (Mast Boot Record and Master File Table) which GParted may be recognizing as sda1. I've never used GParted so I can't be sure. Usually partition managers will warn you before you try moving your boot partition because that will cause your machine to become unbootable, you can't just "move" your boot partition.
Why didn't you just "Extend" the partition to absorb the Unallocated space in front of the boot partition? That way none of the files will move but the space will now be a part of the boot partition. This can be done from within Windows Disk Manager and I recommend you do it that way. I find that sometimes Windows doesn't like the formatting done by 3rd party partition managers, and refuses to work with the space...sometimes.
