Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

I currently have a working install on a second harddrive in this computer. I was wondering if there was any way I can access the other windows install from this one and use it to fix the problem? I guess this also means that the problem is due to a driver because the mouse and keyboard work on the new install.

Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

Hi Ehaic,

See if you can boot into Safe Mode and reinstall the mouse and keyboard drivers from there. This will show you how to boot into Safe Mode if needed.

Safe Mode

If not, can you connect it by the PS/2 port or have a PS/2 keyboard that you can use temporarily until you install the drivers for your USB keyboard back?

Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

Has your bios got usb support for the mouse and keyboard. If so turn it on and this may solve your problem. Look for legacy support for usb mouse and keyboard in OS. Most new motherboards do have this option.

Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

Second post shows the OP has a new issue - new install works with the KB and mouse as it should - so the new issues is trying to access all the old material on the other partition or drive.

Obviously the BIOS is working correctly if the new install is working correctly. No need to muck around in there right now.

However, trying to 'fix' the old install is going to prove to be hairy, as you'll need to be booted into that old install to actually do fixes, unless you can somehow load registry settings and find the drivers manually. Have you tried booting into the old install in Safe Mode and then checking the drivers for both mouse and KB, as Brink mentioned? Obviously you'll need a PS/2 KB and mouse to work until you can get the drivers installed....

The reason I mentioned legacy support is that some mouse and keyboards will work with this turned on. Rather than the OS talking to the bios to support the mouse and keyboard, it is the other way around.

Look here for more info: Support for USB and Legacy Keyboards and Mouse Devices

Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

I understand what you mean, but it doesn't seem right that the setting is the issue, because the OP is on the same computer, just a different install on a different HD, and it allows the computer to work on one install and not another indicates a driver problem as opposed to a BIOS setting....

I think you have the right of it, Ehaic, in that your driver(s) must have gotten corrupted. To fix the first install, I'd first try to see if you can grab / borrow regular old PS/2 style KB and Mouse and then boot into the old install and see if the drivers are fine in device manager.

Failing that, I suggest following the advice in this post - Access information stored on old Hard Drive (a hint as to how to do this successfully is in the very next post).

I agree, it is a driver issue, using the legacy setting may get around it if a new keyboard is not available. It seems easier to press del on boot up and change one setting which may allow the keyboard to work allowing access to the harddrive from boot.

Re: USB mouse and keyboard not working

Wait - the mouse no longer receives power, but the KB still works in the original boot - when you get to the logon screen try using either [TAB] or [Alt-Tab] and then [TAB] to select the user you want to pick, so you can log in.
