I am running a super micro H8DA8 motherboard with 2 amd opteron 250's & 4 gig of corsair xms ddr 400 (3200) ram. I want to install vista x64 but I cant find software & a driver for a ATI Radeon 9250 256mg PCI video card. This server is fast but useless for my ViewSonic without DVI connectivity. Can anyone help?

That video card is over 4 years old now, you won't find a signed driver for it for x64. You can get video cards dirt cheap now, save yourself the hassle and just buy a new one.

Thanks Shao128, I realize this card is older I just happen to have 10 of them. I will find something on NewEgg. If you have any suggestions for a PCI-X 66 or 133 slot let me know.

Thanks,

Rick

Im partial to ATI, just my personal preference. Is this box going to be used strictly as a server? If so you can probably get a 2000 series card for less than $50 or 3000 series for under $100 now that the 4000's are out.

Btw those 9250's will work on Vista 32bit, I've used them.

I am also partial to ATI products. My delema is I finally trashed my desktop PC which was a work horse but begain to have MB issue's and I have this sever that kicks butt and I havent been using. The problem is it has onboard video and only 2 PCI slots and althought it is a UlTRA 320 SCSI machine the onbourd USB is 1.1 go figure for a gigalan machine. I gueus what I am saying currently the 2 pci slots have a sound card and a 2.0 Adaptec USB/Firewire contrller and I really want to use the 64 bit Opterons so which 1 will be the cheapestest to give up and move to a PCI-x slot. I will be using this machine for Audio & Video editing.

I have an entirerly seperate system I use for my AV now but I've got $60 grand in that system and I believe this server will render me some high-end results if I configure it right. I have searched NewEgg and several other suppliers until I am blue in the face and this is the 1st time in years I can't make a dission.

By the way you are the ony one who has responded to me and I know I am a Newbie but I would like to put you on my friends list if that is ok as I Build alot of custom servers and purchase a ton of componnents and always like to return favors and info.

Sorry I must have read what you posted wrong, I had PCI-X confused with PCI-E. Unfortunately as far as I am aware there are no PCI-X specific video cards avalible, just PCI card which PCI-X is backwards compatible with. So unfortunately your options are limited. The 9250 is one of the higher end PCI cards, so if you have to use it under Vista x64 you could see if there is a 64bit XP driver for it, and trying installing it. You will get an message saying the driver is not signed and will have to hit F8 every boot to bypass driver signing.

You could also try a D-Sub (VGA) to DVI adapter and use the onboard video.

And ya thats fine you can add me to your friends list.

No my original post probably wasn't clear enough. I think I have a solution to free up 1 of the 2 PCI slot on the MB by purchasing a PCI-X audio card, maybe one of the new Creative XF-I cards. Once again it appears to me the are PCI-X but I must be sure. What are your thoughts? Also SuuperMicro's manuals are great but I am not clear on the difference between a green PCI-X slot & a white slot. on the H8DA8 MB there are 4 PCI-X slots 3 are white and the one next to the PCI slots is green there are no PCIe slots at all. I should understand this but I think I having an Alzheimer's moment, do you know the the difference, I have never had to use the green slot on any of the servers I have built with this motherboard.

I have tried the D-Sub to DVI but either way the onboard ATI rage video is only 8mg. The ViewSonic works fine but with out ant memory to speak of there is really no refresh rate. Under normall use its OK but I am looking for at least the performance of the 9250.

I appreciate your help!

Heres a quote on Wikipedia about PCI-X

PCI-X is often confused with PCI-Express, commonly abbreviated as PCI-E or PCIe. While they are both high-speed computer buses for internal peripherals, they differ in many ways. The first is that PCI-X is a parallel interface that is directly backward compatible with all but the oldest (5-volt) standard PCI devices. PCIe is a serial bus that offers no compatibility with older buses. PCI-X and standard PCI buses may run on a PCIe bridge, similar to the way ISA buses ran on standard PCI buses in some computers. This should not be confused with compatibility. PCIe also matches PCI-X and even PCI-X 2.0 in maximum bandwidth. PCIe x1 offers 250 MB/s in both directions, and currently supports up to an x32 standard at 8 GB/s.

PCI-X has a number of technological and economical disadvantages from PCI-Express. The 64-bit parallel interface requires inherently difficult trace routing, because as with all parallel interfaces, the signals from the bus must arrive simultaneously or within a very short window, and noise from adjacent slots may cause interference. The serial interface of PCIe suffers fewer such problems and therefore requires less complex and less expensive designs. PCI-X buses, like standard PCI, are half-duplex bidirectional whereas PCIe buses are full-duplex bidirectional. PCI-X buses run only as fast as the slowest device whereas PCIe devices are able to independently negotiate the bus speed. Also, PCI-X slots are longer than PCIe 1x through PCIe 16x, which makes it impossible to make short cards for PCI-X. PCI-X slots thus take quite a bit of space on motherboards, which can be a problem for ATX and smaller form factors.

You can read the whole article here PCI-X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So you are basically limited to a PCI video card. Which finding a signed driver for x64 is going to be pretty difficult. You could try the unsigned method I posted about in my last post. Short of that you might be better of going to Vista 32. Have you run into other driver issues when you installed x64 or did everything install ok?

Thanks Shao123, Your explination is clear. I thought these were serial buses now I understand they are parallel I can take it from here. I will just build me a new machine and move this server back to Windows Small Buisness Server 2008. If this server had 2.0 USB onboard I could live with 2 PCI slots. I purchased 5 of the same MB's but with onboard audio instead of video, this was about 2 months later and they are 2.0 USB and have 3 PCI slots, 4 PCIe slots, 1 PCI-X 1 & 1 IMPI slot. Even though they are considerly differnet in configuation of the expansion slots the MotherBoards are the same in layout. The SuperMicro manual does not differ between MB's even though they are both H8DA8 boards. I must have simply not been conserned at the time as the MB for this server was fine, I will rebuid the software package and put it back in service at my facility in Chicago.

Thanks so much for your help and lets please stay in touch!
