Tempermental DVD RW - need some help pse

Hi

I have a Samsung DVD/CD drive which is tempermental and I do not think it is the DVDRW but Vista. This is because it was working fine when I did a Vista clean install (yesterday) and Vista has behaved strangely by creating a Floppy Disk Drive a: when I last logged in and I do not have one fitted?

When I load a CD/DVD into the drive the 'normal' wurrring noise and light flash but then they time out. If I try and access it through explorer it says load a disk?

I am baffled and would not mind some advice to help narrow down the problem.

Vista gets hardware information about DVD, floppy, hard drives from the BIOS. It sounds like you BIOS is reproting an A drive (which on my mobo is a setting) and not reporting the DVD (that port maybe disabled).

Is this a SATA drive or PATA(IDE)?

My DVD drive is SATA. I will check my BIOS settings aagin. Thanks for the replies.

Solved it by using an IDE drive. I replaced the SATA one - and did a fresh install. All seems to be working fine now.
