nVidia driver shuts down windows

Hi, I recently installed Vista x64 and it worked well untill I install nVidia driver, I've tested with 175.19 and 177.83 versions and both didn't worked, the first one kills the screen like it has no cable connected, the light turns orange and the 177 version messes up with windows, it's like suddenly all things like sidebar, start menu and all the windows start to disappear. But if I boot in safe mode it works well, if I uninstall drivers works well too. Do anybody knows what's the problem with it?
(Sorry if my english is bad).

Re: nVidia driver shuts down windows

Hi, Zangrandi, and welcome to the forums.

When you boot to safe mode you are using a very generic Windows VGA driver - so no, your driver is not working in Safe Mode, it is not *active* in safe mode.

In order to use the 177.83 driver you need to have a GeForce 8 series, 9 series, or 200 series card.
  1. Uninstall the nVidia driver you currently have installed.
  2. Download Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
  3. Install Driver Sweeper
  4. Reboot into Safe Mode ***this is critical****
  5. Run Driver Sweeper and remove all instances of the nVidia - Display drivers.
  6. Reboot back into normal Windows
  7. Now try installing the 177.83

BTW, neither of those drivers are listed for that model card at nVidia.com:

Re: nVidia driver shuts down windows

I think that the nVidia website is not updated cause these drivers don't appear for any GeForce model, at least for me. I'm travelling but when I got home I'll try with one of those drivers that the website shows.

Re: nVidia driver shuts down windows

The .83 drivers include the PhysX software for G92 based GPUs - if you use techPowerUp! :: Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.2.7 you can see if your 8600GT uses that or the older G80....

Re: nVidia driver shuts down windows

It shows G84, I think it support PhysX because I've installed 177.83 on Windows XP and it's running normal.

Re: nVidia driver shuts down windows

Did you check to see if the PhysX software and Control Panel item were there?
