Problems with Samsung ML-1630 and USB printer drivers

I have a problem with my new Samsung ML-1630. When I try to install it using the provided CD, it is installed by default onto the FILE printer port rather than USB001, and, changing it to USB001, I get no response from the printer and all documents fail to print.

I try installing it without CD on a different vista machine, all works fine, it downloads the driver from windows update, printer works fine. Doing the same on my vista laptop, I get an error message saying "USB printing support: the System cannot find the file specified".

I try installing the printer manually, no luck, i've pasted backup copies of usbprint.sys and associated files in and rebooted to no effect, I've deleted INFCACHE.1 and rebooted, still no success, and I've pretty much run out of things to do.

The printer does appear in the device manager, and is recognised as a ML-1630, but its properties say drivers are not installed (Code 28).

One difference I noted between the install on a 'working' machine and my laptop is that when it worked, the "installing device driver software" screen showed two lines, one showing USB printing support is OK, and the other searching for the ML1630 driver. On my laptop that first line is not present.

Aside from reinstalling windows, what can I do? I would like to try reinstalling the vista USB printer drivers, but I think that's easier said than done, and they don't seem to be available anywhere.

My laptop is a Packard Bell Easynote, Vista Home Premium (Windows v6.0, build 6000). I can post any other information if needed. Please help me resolve this?
