Mouse not working properly.

Ive got vista ultimate 64. With a standard computer.
My problem is that I cant configure my mouse buttons.
After I install the latest 64bit mouse driver, and click on the mouse icon to configure the mouse buttons, an error pops up that says -

'Some mouse settings might not work until you connect a Microsoft mouse to a USB port on your computer or set up a Microsoft mouse that uses Bluetooth technology'.

The problem is that I have a microsoft mouse that is connected to a USB port.

The mouse works fine on my spare XP computer so its not the mouse that's faulty.

I tried separate microsoft mice - wheel mouse optical and the intellimouse optical, both by microsoft and both have same issue.
I tried different usb ports and same happens.
I tried the ps2 port and same happens.
I uninstallled all mouse drivers and reinstalled but no help.
Basic left and right click works but cant configure the wheel button.

It was working a week ago, but I went for a holiday and when I came back it was faulty.

All vista updates are installed, security is the windows firewall, AVG free antivirus, and windows defender, but none of these have been a problem before.

Reinstalling vista is not an option, it takes 70+ hours to restore my comp to its working condition, I dont really have the time to do that. And im not really sure it would work anyway.

Can anyone think what may be happening, or how to fix? Im not a pro at computers.

thanks in advance for answers.

Go into your device manager and uninstall the mouse.
When you reboot it will re-install the mouse as it will "find new hardware".
Post your results.

Firstly, I went into 'programs and features' and deleted the microsoft intellipoint 6.3 program. This takes the mouse driver back to its standard windows driver.
Everything works fine, in terms of movement and right and left click and the mouse wheel. But with the standard windows driver there is no option to configure the mouse wheel 'button'.
So if Im surfing web pages, and I hit the wheel button, I get that scroll option icon on the web page and the mouse can be used to scroll up and down pages.

So then I uninstall the mouse from the device manager (as suggested), rebooted, and the mouse is still in its standard default functioning.(described above).

So up to this point everything is working as expected. The mouse is performing fine, just no options to 'configure' different button options.

So this is why I download and install the intellipoint 64bit mouse driver, so I can configure the different buttons on my mouse for different things, eg, I like the mouse wheel button to perform a 'back' function.

So I install the 'latest' vista driver, and all seems to go well with the installation, until I hit the new mouse icon on my desktop, and the above error comes up.(about some mouse settings may not work etc..'.

The issue is the I cant get the mouse wheel button to do anything else apart from its default function of 'scrolling icon'. Even if I assign it a different function, the mouse will still just do its default.

I hope this is clear, its difficult to explain.

Thx Roy for responding.

Yep it is clear. Have you tried posting in the news groups?
Are there any other drivers you can try?
Have you looked on the microsoft knowledge base?
I am at work at the moment but I will look at my system when I get home to try and solve the problem.
Have you looked at services running?
When you installed the intellipoint software did you do it with administrator rights?

Did you try running your mouse as admin? I kinda had the same problem playing crysis on my x64 boot, some buttons wouldn't do anything even though I had a custom profile with the game. As soon as I choose to set the mouse with admin rights, I am able to use them all.

It is a bit of a pain because it ask me to allow or cancel the rights everytime I start or restart the pc but this is the only way I managed to use them all.

Thx roy for the ideas.

I will post in the news groups.
It doesnt accept old drivers because it will only accept 64 bit drivers.
I will look at the knowledge base.
There are lots of services running. What would I look for?
Im the only user and administrator of my comp, so I think I install with admin rights. Unless Im missing something else about admin rights I dont understand.

I tired unplugging comp for 10 mins, didnt do anything.
I tried uninstalling all 'human interface devices' from the device manager - rebooting - and plugging them back in 1 by 1, but no luck.
I tried all the usb ports I have, all have same problem.

I was wondering if running a windows 'repair' would work, or would it upset all the regular programs I have?

Wasn't too difficult to find it, just Googled "IntelliPoint 6.2 x64" and found it on the third or fourth result. It's too bad MS doesn't get a backlog, or at least one you can find for those that need an older driver version for whatever reason.

Filehippo is another place that is pretty good for older driver versions, unfortunately they don't tend to have the x64 versions. But it still comes in handy for finding out what the version number is for the older driver(s).
