DirectX 9.0c problem

I'm coming here because every website and forum so far has been unsuccessful in getting me a solution. My issue is that I cannot update DirectX 9.0c to the November 2008 release. I try to run recent games (Spider-Man WoS, Fallout 3) and get the message that D3dx9_38.dll is not found - which is true, a search does not find it. All these other sites say to just update the DirectX. Ok, I try that. But when I try to update DirectX from either the web update on Microsoft's page or the direct install from either of those disks, I get the error message that the file is in use, even with ZERO programs running and even virus protection shut down. I've tried booting in safe mode, I run the file as admin (I am on the admin account), renamed various DirectX files - all to no avail. Can anyone here give me ANY suggestions as to what to do? These games are worthless, as are any others coming out, as they will all be using this newer version that I can't install/update.

Please Help. I can't install fallout 3. I've all the system requirements and more, I have vista 64 bit with a dvdrw drive with labelflash.(might be the problem?) I heard it could be a securom issue, but I can't download the securom patch without having the game already installed. I've tried everything from running fallout as an administarator to copying into a new folder and running it from there. Any help please.

i doubt labelflash is the problem mate , whats the exact issue? any error during install? any error code? anything?

its installshield thats the problem , try renaming your InstallShield folder try putting something like old at the end , the instalshield file is here C:\program files(x86)\common files\

so it would read C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield old

rename it back to original if it works

edit , it might be a good idea to delete ALL your temp files first

EDIT...just seen this


1) copy all the contents of the fo3 dvd to a folder on you desktop and removed fo3 dvd for tray.
2) find setup.exe and right click on it -from the menu select "properties"
3) From the new menu click on the "Compatability" tab
3) Check "run this program in compatability mode for:" and select "windows98/me"
3) Also check "run this program as admin"
4) Click "apply" and "ok" to close menu
5) Run the setup.exe for the FO3 that you copied to you desktop

Getting back to the original point of this thread...

Thank you for your replies, but installing even the full install of DirectX and not the web download version gives the same message about files being in use. I can't get around this problem, no matter what I try. A reinstall of Windows Vista is not an option, unfortunately. :mad:

Any further suggestions?

EDIT: Oh, and I tried just copying the file, but it did nothing. Since that file was from an older update (that obviously never took) and not the November one, does the core .dll file not read it? Also, I tried booting from the Vista CD and running from command prompt, and it gave me an error also and said to look at the error .txt file, but none was created.

Actually I have a Similar Problem, Mine isn't Directx 9.0 but Directx 10, And i belive it has also to do with my Video Card, I have an nVIDIA GeForce 6200 (PCI)(BFG) and the drver always stops responding on all of my High Graphics games except for one of them. 4x4 Evolution2, instead of crashing like the other games, it gives me a DirectX error. But it dose allow me to play this game using Open GL, only game i can play atm, and for all of you who know the game, it does get boring...Fast!

    I put 2 different Motherboards cause i have 2 different motherboards on hand, Of Course i cant use them both at the same time, but i switch them out ocasionally becasue the older modle one has a PCI Express Port on it, and i use it when i need to! :P

have you tried to install the directx that was supplied with the game(on the disc), the november update only updates directx 10, not directx 9. Try this and i will be surprised if it doesnt work.

have you tried to install the directx that was supplied with the game(on the disc), the november update only updates directx 10, not directx 9. Try this and i will be surprised if it doesnt work.

Based on the article I read here - D3dx9_38.dll - D3dx9_38.dll Not Found Error - Missing D3dx9_38.dll - Fix D3dx9_38.dll

I would try updating DX9c with these files - Download details: DirectX 9.0c Redistributable for Software Developers

Ok, I tried the redistributable - no luck.
Tried again from the disk - no luck.
Checked for update to video drivers (Nvidia 7600GT) - up-to-date (9/28/08 version).

Still a no-go.

At this point, am I looking at a Windows wipe and reinstall? Something is seriously wrong with this.

fallout 3..has anybody solve the problem missing component 3d3x9_38.dll yet.after downloading? vista home premium 64.directx10,nvidea 9300..-----????

i cant load directx 9.0c from microsoftdownload and i cant load the directx from the game cause it stops and says that at least one of directx is in use or something how get around this???

Also, It would be very helpful to post system specs. Without them, help is limited; whether here, or elsewhere.
