Move Vista64/780i to 790i?

So, I have a 780i chipset motherboard, and have Vista64 installed using a Highpoint RAID controller. I'd like to upgrade to a 790i mobo, and would like to know if the 790i board will recognize my existing Windows installation. I don't expect perfect compatibility, just enough to get to the desktop (or even safe mode) so I can install the proper chipset drivers. Anyhow, anybody know if this will work?

Thanks in advance,

ara

$300 dollars later.... "Damn it doesn't work" HAHA

But nah it will recognize the installation but you may need to uninstall board specific drivers BEFORE you change. Otherwise it may have issues starting/upgrading drivers later.

Hope i helped

NB: ALWAYS install drivers AFTER making the change otherwise they might not properly initialize and then you get into a whole lot of problems

Re: Move Vista64/780i to 790i?

Thanks for the feedback: I have a years worth of software and crap installed on this thing, that's why I'm being cautious. Clean installs have long ago ceased to amuse me.. And it's $300 for the board, $300 for DDR3 RAM, and a few more hundred for new waterblocks, so I'm not willing to experiment if I don't have to.

Uninstalling the Nvidia drivers beforehand is an excellent idea, thanks for that, Mattinahat. Windows should (in theory) detect the new chipset and install the correct drivers.
