Installing HP Laserjet P2015d on Vista 64

Hello,

I am trying to install this printer (HP Laserjet P2015d) on my Vista 64 machine. It works fine on my XP Pro machine. HP has posted drivers for this OS/printer configuration (HP LaserJet P2015 Printer series*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center).

However, the installation programs does not work. The installation program does not seem to recognize the printer even when the printer is connected and turned on. Ironically the device (occasionally) shows up on the Vista Device manager panel, but not on the printer panel. The installation instruction mentions that the new hardware wizard should pop up on connecting, but it does not.

I contacted HP support (a nightmarish labyrinth of automated messages). After negotiating through this maize for more than 15 minutes, I finally reach a human. Guess what? They want money to fix their own problem! It is hardly a year old.

Any one of the gurus on this forum can help fix this?

Thanks,

-Victor

Is the printer plugged into a USB port? If so, unplug it then plug it back in, when/if you get the new hardware found box asking you for drivers, ignore it, then run the drivers you downloaded for vista and run them. The drivers "should" then be picked up. Reboot and see if it works.

The other thing you might want to do is see if there are any special instructions for installing the drivers, even if this means lookng at the printer's manual. i.e does the printer need to be on or off, stuff like that.

Tried unplugging and plugging in. Unfortunately the hardware wizard doesn't pop up.

The installation program uploaded by HP actually has an exe that is supposed to install the drivers when executed with the printer connected. I believe the actual drivers are embedded in the .cab files that comes with the installer and is opaque to the OS by default. The installation program fails to detect the printer and quits.

Try installing the drivers with admin rights.

I am running with administrator rights.

An update:
After I start the installer and it prompts to plug in the printer, if I plug and unplug the printer, then it says "new printer detected, please wait ...". But then it says "operation failed" and quits.

Just managed to install the drivers manually! Basically, HP's installation software do not work. HP has not posted the printer utility software for Vista 64. I guess I have to leave without it.

However, this did teach me something about HP Customer Service. Not sure if I will choose their product if I have a choice.

I am running with administrator rights.

I run with admin rights as well, but some programs (Winzip 11 comes to mind) still require that box to be checked for certain functions.

At any rate, check that your cable is good. Also look to see if the printer is listed in the printer folder. It may have installed. Also are your sure you have the right driver? Stranger things have happened; Trust me :)

Edit: Never mind - Glad to see you got it installed.
