hi,

optional windows update download for realtek network ethernet (real name too long) = so i downloaded it and installed and reboot then my internet/ethernet connection no longer worked! had to uninstall that device manaager, then use my gigabyte mobo
disc to reinstall their ethernet device, reboot, and that worked.

wonder why that recommended update didn't work?

also in "view updates" that realtek update showed, but in "uninstall updates" it did not show so I could not uninstall it there.

hmm, anyone else use that download?

also just got a bsod while using windows updates. the system log showed error - computer shut down unexpectedly, but gave no reason lol. it was evidently as surprised as me.

Hi msongs,

As John said windows updates for drivers are not necessarily good. Your Motherboard manufacturer will normally have better ones

If you are having problems because of the driver, Go to Device Manager, right click on your your audio device, select properties, select the Driver tab, and then click on Roll Back Driver. This will reinstall the last driver.

If you want to uninstall the Realtek software Go to Control Panel , Programs. You can uninstall it here.

The Realtek software is unlikely to be the problem but you might want to uninstall it to be sure. You will still be able to adjust the sound functions without it using windows menus.

In answer to your other question if anyone else has used this download. Due to the many types of Hardware/Software other people will have different experiences to you, so the question is sort of not worth asking.

I hope this helps

Also after you reinstall your regular driver make sure you right click the driver in windows update and it won't bug you about it and so you won't download it again.

thanks for the replies. didnt know about right clicking to "hide" an update. do have the realtek driver installed from their cd now tho so all is well on that front. wonder what the update for my monitor is? not gonna get it tho. have it installed as generic pnp monitor which makes it easier to profile.

Just got through reinstalling Vista Ultimate 64 on my Gigabyte MA-GA790GP-DS4 because my onboard NIC died after applying all the recommended Windows updates.

It could see the two computers connected to the same switch, but couldn't see anything connected through the router Went through heck playing with dynamic and static addresses, deleting and reinstalling drivers, changing subnets, and swearing. Nothing worked.

Glad to know its Microsoft and not the new mobo going bad. Re-applied the updates EXCEPT the Realtek RTL8168B/8111B optional update and things are fine...

Beware.

This is precisely why people advise, both here and on other forums, that you should only get updates for Windows and hardware manufactured by Microsoft from Microsoft and that driver updates for all other hardware should be obtained directly from the relevant hardware manufacturer.

I installed mine just now (before I read this and got scared) and everything seems to be fine. I wonder if they fixed the issue. I am having no issues. I have tested everything I can think to test. Just in case someone wants to do it through MS update and is concerned. I agree however to go directly to the manufacturer for updates. I just did my video from Nvidia 2-3 weeks ago and it worked fine.

Yes - installed realtek driver via windows update, stupidly, and lost the network Windows couldn't even start the device. Luckily system restore worked perfectly, and it only cost a couple of hours.
