driver issue for printer

I have a notebook with Windows Vista 64. I'm trying to add a shared HP deskJet 5150 that is connected to my desktop computer running XP on a local network. downloaded theVista 64 driver file from HP, installed it but I can't get the system to install the drivers. Windows keeps asking me for the location of the "inf" file and I don't know where they are. The message does not specify the name of the inf file that I need to find. Can anyopne help please?

Re: driver issue for printer

Do you know where you downloaded the Vista driver? if you do, go to that folder, find the driver and even though it must have an .exe extension, it is a compress file and you must uncompress it first.

Normally, all you have to do is right click and click on Uncompress or Unrar (if you have WinRar) and it will uncompress the files in the same folder, otherwise, if you double click on it, it will initiate the installation but it will also tell you where it will uncompress the file first.

I would try the first option first since this is the easiest way I think, I am not to savvy when it comes to Networking.

I have the answer to this but its a bit complicated to type out on here. I spent a while with HP customer service figuring out the same issue. If you have yahoo or aim messenger contact me at kb9kst.
