Adaptec U320 39320D -> Vista x64 BSOD

Has anyone managed to get Vista x64 installed while having raid enabled.

I had a nightmare recently where my missus spilt tea over my PC, killed my Mobo / 8800GTX card and my Cellshock memory.

OK I now got a new P5Q WS Asus board (don't buy one by the way IDE & SCSI doesn't work together!)... anyways...

I got a new GTX260 OCX and about to get some PC2-9200 OCZ Reaper HPC memory...

All seamed fine, until I tried to install vista again, this time using Raid as I got a new 147GB SCSI drive so decided to raid my 2 x 37 GB drives with the OS.

I've got the latest drivers from Adaptec website and my SCSI card has the latest bios on it. Same problem as before, BSOD when trying to install SCSI Raid Drivers.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Cheers,
1DMF.

What is the BSOD code? Should be something like 0x000000a0 or something or BCCode: 3b

ummm right now couldn't tell you, i'm at work , does it matter?

What different codes could it be and what would they mean?

Do you have a fix for a specific code or range of codes? that you could let me know so when I get home I can try it if the codes match?

My Computer

There are at least a couple hundred error codes.......

Depending on the code, the error could be completely different things. Most common on these forums have been the 0x0000000D3 and 0x00000000A0 codes.

Yours could be different. Just post it when you get home.

It says "driver has overrun a stack based buffer" then the technical information is *** STOP: 0X000000F7 (0XFFFFF980018259E0, 0X00002B992DDFA232, 0XFFFFD466D2205DCD, 0X0000000000000000)

Does that help?

My Computer

Yes it does indeed thank you. OK there are two possibilities of that code: One, you have a nasty virus. Two, bad driver. I will assume the second one since you were installing it when it happened. Though run some scans anyways just to check.

To fix this, uninstall the driver. I believe it to be caused by the SCSI driver. Can you use your system without that driver or hardware setup?
You may need to wait until completed drivers are released....

Obviously it's not a virus, the drive is new, has been low level and then NTFS formatted, and has nothing on it, this is a new install.

I contacted adaptec and here is their response...
Hello from Adaptec-

Thank you for your message.

The most common issue is the driver utilized.

You will need to download the driver here;

Adaptec - Adaptec Driver: Ultra320 64-bit SCSI Drivers Ver. 7.0.0.6 for Windows Vista, Microsoft certified Download Detail

Your product is beyond support and out of hardware warranty.

These expired in 11/12/2004 and 11/12/2007 consecutively.

Support is available at an $80 charge per incident.

Basically the drivers don't work as they supply a link to the non-hostraid drivers, what does that tell you.

The cheek to want $80.00 after i'd spent @ $1,000 on the card and HD, never again will I buy Adaptec, that's for sure!

Exactly. It would be cheaper to buy a new HDD. I don't use RAID as the cards are a lot, and I'm not sure what the point of them is.

Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

why dont you use SATAII based RAID? drivers are built onto the bios and its no additional hardware costs

Do you have all the drivers and such?

~Lordbob

just the older drivers, when I install the newer ones, vista doesn't boot. with nvidia it has a seperate package of drivers for that, when you do the install wizard for it, it specifies where to unpack them and how to install. i'm just too lazy to do it at this current time. anyways just the regular ones i have from 5 years ago work fine! i have two 150gb hard drives. no problems.

err because I have a u320 SCSI Card, and 3 x u320 15k rpm 3.4 ms seek SCSI hard drives.

SCSI drives are also more efficient than standard PATA/SATA drives. you can't even get a 15k SATA drive!

and SATAII is only upto 300GBS mine is 320GBS , plus the PCI is running in 64bit mode!

You know all the reasons why you have SCSI in the first place!

But granted, the cost of SCSI and now the problems with Adaptec falling off their perch as SCSI kings as their drivers don't work and their support sucks, will mean when I upgrade again in 5 years, I will no longer go down the SCSI route.

SATA is so close on it's heals at a fraction the price, SCSI just isn't worth it any more, but it isn't worth me throwing away £800.00 quids worth of SCSI stuff just yet either!

My Computer

Yea my raid works fine on vista 64. but my geforce 7900 gt doesn't work.

You have a 64bit PCI-X slot running SCSI raid on an Adaptec u320 controller yet only running a geforce 7900gt video card?

What Mobo are you running?
