Troubleshooting boot issue

For quite a while, I have faced a black screen when booting Vista. BIOS runs nicely and Vista starts loading but stops dead with black screen just prior to login screen. After turning power off and restarting, I get the option to run a startup repair or boot normally. As I have a OEM pre-SP1 restore partition, I always choose normal start and this time Vista starts nicely. Guess I have a driver issue. Otherwice computer runs nicely.

I thought this was related to a faulty memory stick, but as this has been replaced, and the error persist, I guess it is something else. Will run more memory tests tomorrow, and will try to update graphics driver.

The problem does not appear in the event log and I do not get any error message. Anyone have a suggestion, how to troubleshoot this, whithout going through the trial and error process of installing drivers for just about everything, as this could just as well cause more problems than it solves?
