Canon i950 Driver Will Not Install

Have a new Vista 64 Home Premium machine. Have a Canon i950 printer on my XP machine. Canon does not have a Vista driver for the printer. In these forums, found a post explaining there is a "driver add-on" that makes the i950 driver work in Vista.

Obtained the add-on. It requires that the "base driver" be installed (B3319MUX.EXE). When I run the driver's setup program, get "The Printer Driver Has Not Been Installed" message at the 60% completion point. Have tried the install in compatability mode and "run as administator" (Both XP and 2000), but get the same message. I am also logged in to an Administrator account.

Does anyone know of a way to get the base driver installed on Vista 64? Thank you.

Have you followed the instructions on installing the add-on module?

Re: Canon i950 Driver Will Not Install

I've read them (please see the paste, below), but to me "Add-On Module" implies that the original or "base" driver must be present.

------------------------------------------
From the Add-On Driver readme

The following components make up the installation package:
- Installer (setup.exe)
Installs the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver Add-On Module
on your computer.
- Canon Inkjet Printer Driver Add-On Module
Expands the functionality of the printer driver.
- Readme (readme_english.txt)
This document. It contains important information about the

Release notes from link I provided -

Release notes:

Download/Installation Procedures

1. Click the link, select (Save), specify "Save As", then click (Save) to download the file. Memo : If you select (Run) or (Open) instead of (Save), the file will be automatically installed after it is saved.

2. The downloaded file will be saved in the specified place in the self-extracting form (.exe format).

3. Double-click the downloaded EXE file to decompress it, then installation will start automatically.

Note: Before proceeding with your driver installation we suggest you make sure you are installing the latest version available and for the appropriate model/revision and operating system. We strongly suggest following 'readme' instructions for installing drivers when available. Often restarting your system will be necessary for the new driver to become active and start functioning properly.

I'm not familiar with this program, but the way I read it - you install the program first, then the newest canon drivers for the applicable OS. After that, restart the computer.

I would suggest that you try the XP drivers if you don't have Vista; however, being that you have Vista x64, you may be out of luck.

Sorry

Re: Canon i950 Driver Will Not Install

Problem is resolved, but being new to the forum, I don't know how to close the thread.

SYGNUS21's last post caused me to think "I have just done my weekly image backup, so don't have anything to lose if I install the i950 add-on by itself" (as explained in the initial post, the original XP driver's install failed.)

To my surprise, the add-on installed successfully. Then, connected the i950 to a USB port, went to Control Panel => Printers => Add Printer and low and behold it searched for a driver and found it. Prior to the add-on, the driver search had failed.

As a summary, these are the steps I took to get the i950 to work on my Vista 64 machine.

1. Tried to install the XP driver for the i950 printer. It failed at the 60% point.
2. Installed the Vista add-on Driver for the i950.
3. Connected the printer to a USB port
4. Control Panel => Printer => Add Printer
5. Vista found a driver. Printed a test page. Then printed some more items. The printer works just fine, including the display of the printer's Status Monitor.

Hindsight being perfect, since it failed, I don't think Step 1 was necessary, so if I were to do it again, would start at Step 2.

Being a pedantic at heart, I don't understand why Canon calls it a "driver add-on" instead of calling it a "driver for Vista".

Thank you SYGNUS21 for getting me to try it.
