Unable to install 64bit NVidia drivers on Vista 64bit

Hi all,

I want to update the drivers for my GTX260 graphics card.
I downloaded the appropriate driver for my OS, Vista Home premium 64 bit (OEM):
Driver: 182.06_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whgl.
But when I try to run the driver application I get the following error:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.Check your computer's system information to see wether you need an x86(32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact your software publisher".

I have the same problem with 64bit NVidia networkcontrollers.

Is this a known problem or am I doing something wrong?

thanks

stefan

Re: Unable to install 64bit NVidia drivers on Vista 64bit

I was just wondering if this could be just an installer problem.
The filesize of 182.06_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql is just 22kb.
I noticed on another site (64bit and x64) they have a download of the same driver that is a 100 MB.

Is anyone familiar with start64.com? Can I safely download the NVidia drivers
from there?

And do I really need to install 64bit versions of the driver or can I just as well install the 32 bit version of the same driver (even though my OS is 64 bit) ???

Any help would be much appreciated!

stefan

Re: Unable to install 64bit NVidia drivers on Vista 64bit

Hello Stefan, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It's always best to download your drivers directly from the device manufacturer.

GeForce Release 182

or

Latest NVIDIA ForceWare Video Drivers

Since you have Vista 64-bit, you will have to have a 64-bit driver for the device. The latest version is 182.08.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Unable to install 64bit NVidia drivers on Vista 64bit

Problem solved: Do not use a download accelerator!

I'm using Flashget, which starts automatically when I want to download something
but it doesn't seem to work when downloading drivers.
When I turned it off, it downloaded the driver (the full 100MB) just fine and I had
no problems installing it!
I think the NVidia site actually mentions that somewhere...sorry, my bad!

cheers

Re: Unable to install 64bit NVidia drivers on Vista 64bit

I love download managers but yeah, they don't always work well with some sites (Nvidia is one of them), what you want to do is go to Flashget options and delete all the "File Types" from the option screen, this way, flashget will not start inmediately.

I use IDM and it has a File Types Tab, under it, it says... "Automatically start Downloading the following file types:". Flashget should have something similar and you will find a bunch of different file types (ie: .exe, .zip, .rar, .doc, .pps, etc, etc, etc.) just leave it blank and save or hit ok, next time around, it will prompt you or you will have to right click on the file you want to download and choose to download it with Flashget.

Hope I haven't confused you more.
