SATA DVD drivers

Hi there,

I've looked for 3 days now and i simply cannot find a solution to my problem!

I have a Acer PC with Vista HP and i would like to switch over to Vista Ultimate x64 (genuine license available!!).

I never had this problem before. The PC has SATA HDD's and a SATA DVD drive. When i enter the Setup, Windows is asking for the drivers. It cannot find my DVD drive! I've downloaded the sata drivers and put them on a USB stick. Windows cannoit find the drivers, when i browse for it.

Before i used to enter the BIOS and change the SATA mode, but that was for HDD's and XP installations.
However, i cant even find that option on the #%$W Acer motherboard.

Could someone please point me into the right direction? I would really appreciate it.
It's a Acer Aspire M3641.

Thanks in advance.

So, tell me, if Windows during the setup (which I assume you run from the DVD disc) cannot find your dvd drive, how where you able to even run the setup ?
OK, question was stupid, sorry, but I couldn't resist

All that you need the system has already in itself, you don't need any additional drivers to make your SATA DVD drive work. I have two DVD ReWriters on SATA and those were detected by the system (and setup) without any issues.

My advice is that you write down your current BIOS settings on paper or anywhere else, reset BIOS to the default values, and check again what happens when you try to install the system. If this won't change the situation than I'm out of ideas... at least for now

If his computer was bought in a computer store, as I assume, since it's a branded desktop, it might be impossible to swap the drives because of the warranty, which could be void if he opens the case... For now lets treat that as a last possibility.

Re: SATA DVD drivers

Something funny happend to me about this update drivers. I got an alert saying I needed this critcial update. When it tried to load, my system said it did not configure correctly so it uninstalled it--twice. I finally contacted HP and they told me that I did not need that update. Hummm! Now why did I get an email that says I do and my Windows Update kept trying to put it in??? I finally just hid the update so it wouldn't got in and now everything is fine!!

Go figure!!

Re: SATA DVD drivers

Thanks for replying everyone!

I cannot open the case, due to warranty issues. The PC is for my wife and she will not let me near it. I have a IDE DVD drive, but to connect it, i have to break the seal.

Why didn't i just configure my own PC, like always??

The Acer configuration comes with so much junk, its unbelievable. Norton, Acer junk, DVD software junk (trial) etc.

I want to upgrade, because it has 4 GB of memory and its a 32bits OS, and because my own vLite version of Ultimate is much more quicker (genuine OEM license available)!

This seems to be the problem here

You could let the Handler install x64 it should not cost to much, Otherwise the only other option is to do it yourself

Re: SATA DVD drivers

do you have an external housing for the drive you have or an outright external dvd drive you could hook up via usb and boot from it? or you mentioned vlite... can you do a vlite image and save it to a usb drive and boot from the usb drive?

http://lifehacker.com/software/vista...ive-240308.php

also, the reason he was able to get to the setup (before windows could not detect the drive or drivers) is because the the bios detected the drive at startup. that happened to me on my last install of vista x64. i checked the bios settings and the drive was detected. however, when i would run the setup disc, windows would state that it needed the drivers for the sata drive. that is the reason i used an ide drive. but we see that he cannot open his case due to warranty issues.

if you can make an image of the disc, see if you can use a usb drive or usb harddrive to install vista x64--maybe you would have some luck that route. probably the last route if all else fails is to do what pooch suggests...
