Digital Camera gives me an error message

I have an older camera that is giving me problems when I try to upload my photos to my computer. I just bought this computer about 3 months ago, so I am still getting used to Vista. To be honest, for the most part, I really do not like it.

Compaq Presario
AMD Anthlon X2 4800 Dual Core Processor
Memory 3G
Hard Drive 320GB
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE Graphics
Vista Home Premium with SP1

The camera is a Sony DSC-W80 Cyber-Shot

When I plug the camera into the USB, I get a small window pop-up that asks if I want to can and fix Removable Disk (G

It basically says that there might be a problem with some files on this device or disc, and gives me two options:

Scan And fix (which says it should prevent future problems...it doesn't)
~ or ~
Continue without scanning

I usually use the latter, but lately I am still having problems...it will then bring up a window to either view or import...I choose the import option. The problem with that is that it doesn't give me the option of choosing which photos I wish to import. There are some photos that I keep on the camera and do not want to keep downloading. I use to be able to choose which ones to download when I used Windows XP.

The other problem is that the video is not imported properly. It shows up as a THM file and only copies a few seconds of video...the rest gets lost somewhere in transport. I don't even know what a THM file is. (The original length is still on my camera)

I have looked and looked to see if there is a solution to this problem and all I seem to find is that I need a driver. When I go to the sony site, it says that Vista should already have the driver. When I try to find an update, I cannot. The only thing I find is something called Picture Motion, and while that is what comes up under my camera...the description states it is a camcorder. It is also a file over 300 MB...not something I am going to download if I am unsure of the file.

I also read on another thread in here of someone else having the same problem. They were told to delete a file called INFCACHE.1, and the instructions were given on how to do that. I attempted to do this, but I do not have that specific file. Mine is INFCACHE and I am not sure if that is the same, so I didn't touch it.

Can someone help?

Re: Digital Camera gives me an error message

Hi mysterysinc,

Welcome to the forum.

When the Camera is connected to the computer it will show up in Computer as a removable drive, You can treat this as any other drive double click, or right click and select open will open it. You can then open any folders that you find and you will eventually find your Photos and Videos, You can copy these to your PC (anywhere you choose) by cut and paste, taking exactly what you want, just like moving stuff around on your PC

You do not need any drivers as you are connecting by USB

Do a right click on your removable drive, open it, copy and paste everything to the desktop. Close the folder. Do a right click on your removable drive and select properties and then the tools tab, you can then check for errors. Select check now, accept the UAC prompt put a tick in the box, Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Select, Start this will fix any fixable problems with the drive. Wait for it to finish, Re-open the drive and copy and paste your files back to the drive.

The THM files are apparently jpeg thumbnails and you should be able to simply append them .jpg to view

The Video files are named the same as the THM files but should show up as .avi files any avi player should play these

As you can see any software to transfer these Pictures or videos is unnecessary and I personally would uninstall it. Other software such as photo explorer for example is Ok.........your call

I hope this answers a few questions and is helpfull
