Hi there all

I havnt posted here before and it is perhaps a sign of my desperation that I now beg for assistance.

I upgraded my AMD 6000+ today from 2GB to 4 GB of RAM. My Vista ultimate x32 worked great for an hour or so until i tried to run 3d mark 06 - it then crashed to BSOD and when i tried to restart i got the following msg:

Storport.sys is corrupt or missing

Repair doesnt work from the vista disk - error continues - and i cant load last good settings or safe mode! I read something about this online but all posts said SP1 fixed this - well i have SP1, so maybe there is another fix i dont know about??

Thanks very much all, I'm desperate to fix this - I need my computer back! :-)

Kind regards,

Kiwi.

Hi FlyinKiwi,

this may seem obvious but have you tried reverting to the old RAM setup -2GB as this error has started with that change ans all the errors relating to Storport.sys also relate to 4GB or more RAM

The other thing to check is has anything to do with RAID or other storage related settings changed in the BIOS settings, as Storport.sys is a storage driver

+1... I'd forgot to mentioned it on my last post.

Also, if you are comfortable with your Bios, you can RESET it back to default settings, clear your Cmos and try again. If you have multiple drivers (SATA), make sure the one with the OS is the primary boot drive.

Hi there all

Thanks for all the assistance, I have indeed tried reinstalling the old RAM - but it seems the files are well and truly corrupted. Windows repair now identifies two corrupted files - storport.sys and nvstor.sys

system restore doesnt work, and i'm guess i cant simply copy new versions of those files back on the system?? (I have been able to access command prompt through the windows disk)

I am concerned by the bios stuff - i must admit i know almost nothing about bios settings, I am thinking i will have to reinstall vista, but if there is a Bios fix you sggest I am willing to give it a go - especially as perhaps a bios error means a vista reinstall wont helap anyway? Thanks again for the help! I'm very keen to fix this!:sarc:

Hi Pooch

I'm runing Vista Ultimate - I have the full disk i - retail, not OEM.

What are your thoughts? Is it likely my Bios is damaged in some way? Or should a reinstall get me going? Next question - is should i reinstall for x32 or x64? I'm hoping 64 might be a way to get around the problem happening again?

My Computer

Hi flyinkiwi,

Are you running RAID?

No I dont think your Bios is damaged

I do think you might be a good candidate for a new install though

Hi there,

No not running RAID, its a pretty standard system really.

So do you recommend the x32 or x64 vista for the reinstall?

thanks again for the help.

My Computer

Yup...Sounds like you need a CLEAN Wds install ....."Save your headache"..IMO.

Hi flyinkiwi,

You asked for my thoughts. Installing the extra RAM was not the problem. I think that when you ran 3d mark 06, that, and I don't fully understand this myself, something tried to right to higher or reserved memory. This should normally not happen, but it has and it has also proved to be quite catastrophic for you. As barman58 pointed out, storport.sys is a storage driver, nvstor.sys is probably your Nvidia SATA Controller driver.

This was most likely a one off, but it would not hurt to stay away from programs that are going to stress your PC.

I could be wrong, but I doubt that your hardware has been damaged.

You are probably already underway :) but a new install will be good x86 or x64 doesn't matter, but think about the DRIVERS that you will need for x64.

Think this time around about making some BACKUPS ;)

I would try installing a fresh copy of Windows but only with 2GBs of RAM, more to the point, only 2 Ram slots used instead of the 4. I have heard horror stories with installation of Vista when all the Ram slots are covered. After you are ready to go, install the other 2 sticks of ram.

Again, hearsay but... that's what I would do.
