Vista x64 - USB Human Interface Driver issue

Frustration grows.

I have a relatively new Gateway FX 7805U running Vista Home Premium x64. I use an external logitech USB wired mouse and a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.

If I restart, I can connect these devices without issue. If I disconnect the devices and then allow the system to sleep, when I wake the computer and attempt to reconnect the devices, they fail to connect.

Perusing the Device manager, there is a yellow icon over the USB Human Interface Device. Checking the properties reveals the issue to be:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38).
If I restart, the issue goes away... until the next time I allow the system to sleep.

Since I regularly move the laptop between work and home with apps running, I use the sleep mode frequently. This is becoming quite a pain in the buttocks.

External USB storage and flash drives connect without issue.

Any suggestions?

Hi Michael, Welcome to the Forum.

You could try going to Device Manager expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on each USB Root Hub, Select properties,Power Management and make sure there are no ticks in the top box.

The problem with this answer is that if you are on battery power with the device connected when it goes to sleep, it will continue to use power!!

Have you tried Hibernate? it's the next best thing to sleep and almost as fast, should the lappy go into Hibernate then no power will be drawn from either the mains or battery.

I hope this helps

Re: Vista x64 - USB Human Interface Driver issue

Thanks for the advice. I will give the power management tweaks a try.

Sad thing is, this worked flawlessly for a few months. Only since the last MS auto update (which restarted my computer while it was supposed to be sleeping... ) has it decided to misbehave.

Thanks Pooch.

Short of using the Hibernation, editing the power settings seems to have been the magic touch required.
