Vista x64 installs incorrect drivers

Recently took delivery of a brand new system with Vista x64 and it seems Vista repeatedly installs the incorrect drivers each time a peripheral device is attached. When i connect new hardware, the new hardware wizard never runs and windows automatically proceeds to install its default drivers.

- Disconnecting from the internet has no effect as the basic drivers are presumably included in the OS file repository.

- I have tried updating the drivers from within the device manager with the correct drivers downloaded from each manufacturer's website, but Vista's update wizard indicates that the most current driver is installed and prevents the correct driver from being accessed and installed.

- i have enabled the option to ask each time to check for drivers when a new device is attached in the advanced system settings>windows update driver settings; and have even tried setting the option to never check for drivers. I have also tried disabling autorun for all devices and media; yet, adjusting these preferences does not affect any changes on the system.

- I even have an older system running vista x64 and have had no such problems

- I am running the new system as an administrator and the problem continues to prevail.

Any assistance would be much appreciated. At a loss for what to do.

incorrect driver installation; xp64 new hardware wizard never runs

- unless I'm mistaken, a driver cannot be installed from within the device manager - after the incorrect driver is deleted/uninstalled - until the device is recognized and visible; for this to happen the device must be reattached at which point vista installs its default drivers without prompting me to search for the correct driver files.

Re: incorrect driver installation; xp64 new hardware wizard never runs

Download the drivers manually.
Go into device manager.
Select the item you want to update.
Click on properties.
Click on driver.
Click on update driver.
Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
Select the driver you downloaded.

tried this previously. vista simply indicates the correct driver is installed and will not install the downloaded, more current, driver.

Go to the website of the device and download the driver manually to your hard drive.. Dont use the update wizard. This is why I stated to search for the driver from the device manager screen.

Hi,

Vista looks in here automatically for drivers:

"C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository"

You could move the offending ones ( or all of them ) somewhere else.

Uninstall the offending drivers in Device Manager- install your preferred ones - then move the driverstore contents back.

I keep them on a separate partition in .zip folder - in case I want to move some of them back. It's 950mb on x64.

all of the most current drivers were previously downloaded manually from each manufacturers website. when I searched from the device manager screen, I attempted to select the driver that I downloaded manually but vista is indicating that the most current driver is installed on my system and simply will not update the driver.

have you tried downloading and installing the drivers? as opposed to trying to update through Device manager?

Can you be more specific?

As these are system files rather than executable files, I'm only familiar with installing the drivers from within the device manager, via the driver update dialogue box, or via the found new hardware wizard which normally allows you to select the driver of your choice. I've tried the first 2 options with no success and the 3rd is never an option since vista autodetects the device and installs the drivers by default. Once the driver and device have been uninstalled, unless I'm mistaken, the system would need to be rebooted or the device unplugged and replugged into the system to get the device manager to recognize the device.

Is there any other method to uninstall, install or otherwise overwrite the incorrect drivers?

The drivers you are trying to install are sometimes in a executable package, (e.g. Video drivers/Audio drivers), Installing these, or using the Vista built in drivers can cause issues.

For example Realtek. Default for windows is the MICROSOFT HD drivers, but these often result in non-muting of the external speakers, and non-functional volume knobs.

Try searching for the driver .exe, and install it that way. Sometimes the Vista driver is not always best. If I try to "update" my audio drivers in Vista it installs the default drivers, and these results in my devices not functioning properly.

[edit]
some of the default drivers are also problematic. Some Printer software drivers that were submitted by the Vendor were glitchy, or didnt work at all (beta).
What is your model #? or Motherboard (if you built it)

I didn't build it but have spent countless hours troubleshooting OS issues on this and past machines, mostly unsuccessfully. This is the 4th hardware configuration in 3 years that I've tried and is likely to have the most promise, but I'm finding new quirks with vista almost daily that are preventing real work from getting done. System specs below; purpose built for graphics applications and editing enormous files:

MSI X58 PlatinumSLI ATX LGA 775 / Motherboard
Intel Quad-Core i7 940 2.93GHZ 8MB L3 Cache / CPU
Original Intel SCKT 775 Heatsink / CPU Cooling
6x Crucial 2GB 240-PIN DIMM DDR3 / RAM
Supermicro CSE-743TQ-865B-SQ Tower / Chassis
Included Whisper-Quiet Power Supply
Seagate Cheetah 146GB SAS 15.6K RPM 16 / Hard Drive (OS)
3x Seagate Cheetah 300GB SAS 15K RPM 16MB / Hard Drive (Data/Scratch)
MSI nVidia GeForce 9800GT PCIE 512MB DDR3 256 / Video Card
Samsung 22X SATA DVDRW-/+ Dual Layer Lightscribe
Adaptec RAID 5405 SATA/SAS Controller
Foxconn 19-IN-1 3.5" Card Reader
Highpoint RocketRAID 2224: 4 Internal / 4 External Channels SATA II RAID Controller (for external storage device)
Internal SATA to External SAS4x adapter (for external storage device)
Linksys WMP54GS Wireless PCI Card v1
OEM windows vista ultimate x64

I'm trying to avoid the default vista drivers at all costs, since most are not current, and unfortunately none of the drivers I downloaded manually are executable packages.

And I am finding the same. Trying to update the drivers, even when pointing to the correct driver on my hard drive, doesn't seem to work always. Vista prevents the installation and indicates that the correct driver is installed from the device manager. The only exception, I found, was when I had a device's driver disc which launched the found new hardware wizard. From here I was able to find the correct driver saved to my downloads. But I don't have driver discs for all of my devices.

It's really beyond me. This is the second system I've had with vista x64, not entirely by choice, and my prior system posed no such issues. Was always able to install, uninstall and update drivers effortlessly. If I could only figure out how to get the found new hardware wizard to function, my problem would likely be solved. The windows update driver settings under advnaced system settings and autorun options under the control panel don't affect any changes on this machine.

thanks.

unfortunately, these are all the drivers I tried to use.

- I was able to force the the rocketraid controller card driver installation via the driver disc that came with the device and this device is pretty much the only device I was able to get working properly prior to this post; though vista did install the wrong driver initially.

- I have attempted to install the hp printer driver several times, specifically the pcl6 driver for vistax64, which is more fully featured, but vista installs the older pcl 5 driver and will not update. Have been unable to get this one installed properly.

- have not yet attached my scanner, but have the correct drivers available for that device also.

I thought you said you tried to install these through device manager?
have you also tried to run the installer app?-through the download itself?

These are the drivers that come with Vista:

HPDRIVERS-2009-05-29_010245.jpg

Try moving them somewhere else, uninstall the drivers from Device Manager - Vista has nothing to install .

Then run the installer for the HP drivers you downloaded.

thanks. another user had a similar suggestion; however, none of the current vista x64 drivers for my devices appear to have 'installers.' I'm assuming you're referring to executable files, but not certain.

the only method I was able to get to work successfully for one of the RAID controllers in the system, was to use the driver disc that came with the device. From the disc, the found new hardware wizard launched, and I was able to search for and install the driver I downloaded online - but this was only after windows had already installed the wrong driver when I added the controller card.

Unfortunately, I do not have driver discs for my other devices.

I'm beginning to wonder whether there is a BIOS settings of sorts that dictates whether the system will search for and install drivers by default either from online or from the windows file repository.

What rive is talking about is to download the driver package from the website, then installing the drivers that came with the driver software.

Most nvidea cards come with there own drivers and software.

Most nvidea cards come with there own drivers and software.

Exactly.

Run the program file by clicking on it, or by extracting all files, then running it. Sometimes, It will have an auto installer, or you will have to open it up, and look for the "setup", or "application"

Long long ago I did what you are doing, trying to install (in my case force install) a driver from the device manager. In Feb 2007, Back when the ATI mobility x1900 was first released, and I installed Vista x64- no one had a suitable driver/app, and Vista did not recognize the adapter. I had two choices, run without a GPU driver, or force install a similiar one. So I downloaded the Vista x64 Desktop X1800, and force installed the driver with device manager onto a x1900 adapter, No catayst- just the driver. it worked.

Installing this way is not the correct way to do it. Let the software app/driver self install.

please pardon my confusion. what or where is the program file?

attached are screenshots of 2 driver packages in question that I downloaded and need to install. There were neither setup files nor auto installers included with either of these downloads, from each manufacturer's website.
