intel ICH9R raid 1 with different sized disks

Hi
I have an ICH9R board and intel matrix storage. I previously had a 1TB drive with 250GB free (not partitioned). I added a second 250GB hard drive. Is it possible to create a raid1 volume (end of 1TB drive+full 250GB drive) without loosing all my data on the other 750GB of the drive? I don't see how to do it in the matrix storage console.
I know it's possible to do this with software raid but vista doesn't support software raid-1.

If it's not possible, can I backup my data, create a 250GB raid1 array in the BIOS, and create an other 750GB partition during vista setup for less critical files or this space will be lost forever?

thanks

AFAIK when you create any RAID array using disks of different sizes, the smallest HDD capacity is taken as a measure for all the HDDs in that array. So in your case the 1TB drive would be using only 250GB, with the rest not accessible for you (just like you only had 2 disk and each had 250GB capacity).
