Vista Tutorial - driver for HP ScanJet 4400C wont install

Yes, old scanner. But it works just fine on my WinXP machine. Of course, my XP computer needs repair work and wont boot.

I went to the hp.com site and found a driver for WinXP, I figured I would run it in compatibility mode. It only partially extracts. The setup.exe file is one of the parts that doesn't extract.

Any suggested solutions to the scanner driver hiccup ?

I forgot about my WinXP laptop. I ran the exe file there. Once it created the folder and extracted all the files, placed them on a usb thumb drive. Copied them onto my Vista computer.

I couldn't find all the tabs they mention on that page you linked to. I had to finagle around after reboot. It wouldn't warm the lamp.

As mentioned on that web forum, I did go into Device manager as suggested and even though I had run the setup program, I still had to use device manager to install the driver.

This time when I clicked on the desktop icon, itwarmed the lamp, and did a scan.

So, while I am not exactly certain of every step, I did get it to work.

Ah, I logged in as admin, set the security properties on the icon as 'full control' and it came up much faster, didn't have to go thru a 'not responding' error, and it scanned.
