Updated video driver, everything's smaller

Hello everyone,

I recently updated the drivers for my video card, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT.

After doing so, the icons on my desktop, my taskbar text, and the websites i visit have all become significantly smaller.

I've tried adjusting some things but maybe in the wrong place.

Any ideas?

I am on Vista Home Basic 32bit

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

your resolution has probably changed to your monitors default

right click desktop then select properties then settings , you can alter your resolution there , lower it to some thing like 1024x768 (for example)

you can do it in nvidia control panel too but thats the easiest way

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

That seemed to work a little bit, however none of the settings bring it back to the way it was before. The letters seem more to be more slender, and the websites i visit are organized in a thinner, more compact way.

It seems to be leaving empty spaces on the sides of the websites i visit which is strange.

Thanks for the help let me know of any other ideas you may have.

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

ok lets try another way what monitor/laptop do you have? and what resolution do you have it set to now? and also what frequncy? 60hz , 70hz?

that res i gave you was just as an example you may have a widescreen monitor which requires dirferant resolutions to look correct

also could you post a screenshot of your desktop with internet explorer open , so we can see your issue just to make sure were not barking up the wrong tree going the resolution route , it could be something else like your DPI setting (which i doubt but its worth a look)

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

ok you want to set your res to 1440x900 or you could try 1280x800 but to be honest you really should stick with 1440x900 for best quality

does setting it to 1440x900 help?

that link is to the file on your pc we cant view it there upload it to here ImageShack® - Image Hosting (click browse , find the file then start upload) it will give you a list of links to that image after its uploaded just post one of them here

edit i forgot to mention if you right click desktop select personalise then display settings to change your res then click advanced setiings
, under the monitor tab set the refresh rate as high as it will go BUT MAKE SURE THE "HIDE MODES THIS MONITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT" BOX IS CHECKED FIRST!!

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

Still waiting on the confirmation email for Image Shack.

I changed the DPI to 96, that seemed to return the font style closer to what it was before.

I changed the resolution to 1280X720, because having it maxed out is way too small.

So basically things have improved, but not quite back to what it was before the driver update.

Seems like i'm getting close, what do you think?

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

difficult to say without a screenie , hard to see what yuor problem is exactly , you dont need to actually register on image shack , that link i gave you is to a direct upload

Im thinking it is just a res issue you may have just had it set very low after a driver install your software will detect the "native res" of your monitor and set it too that (1440x900) as this gives best image quality

what about upping the DPI a little more? Is your text blurry? is that what you mean? have you enabled/disabled "clear type"?................

1/ Right click on a vacant part of your desktop
2/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click Personalize
3/ in The Personalize window, Click the Windows Color and Appearance option
4/ In the color and appearance window, Click the 'open classic appearance properties for more color' option
5/ In the classic appearance properties window, Press the Effects button
6/ A small effects window will now appear
7/ Under the 'use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' section you will see an option box
8/ Click the arrow to the Right of the box and select either 'standard' or 'cleartype' depending upon which you require
9/Next click OK followed by OK again to close the classic appearance setting window
10/ Finally Close the personalization window

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

Please tell me how to do a screenshot. Checking Clear Type makes my eyes hurt more than without it. The font just looks different and its driving me crazy.

Re: Updated video driver, everything's smaller

ok open a apge ie internet explorer that demonstrates your problem , then hit the "printscreen" button on your keyboard (prtscn)

Open microsoft paint (start/programs/accessories/paint)

click edit then paste and your screenie will appear

click file then save as

call it what you like then in tha save as type box select JPG (it should be set to save as that by default)

then in the dropdown box for browse folders select desktop then save

goto this link ImageShack® - Image Hosting

top right there is an upload section , click BROWSE

it will open a window to the files on your pc , navigate to desktop then click the pic you have just =saved then click OPEN

the file path will then appear in the box on the website then click the START UPLOAD button and wait

when its uploaded it will open a new page at the top will be DIRECT LINK TO IMAGE , copy and paste that link here
