CD Drive now runs with no governor

Hello all. I installed Vista Ultimate, and think I'm current with all the updates, service packs, etc.

When I tried today to install a new printer I discovered that the cd/dvd was no longer recognized and but that the driver was listed as current and working.

So I went through all the posts, then through the Vista Support site and found a fix of "delete the upper and lower limits" in a file listed on the site through regedit.

I found only an "upper limit" file, which I deleted. Then I rebooted.

The drive now works, but it runs full out and sounds like a Rolls engine for a 747 heavy.

Since it NEVER did that prior to this, what do I do to put the drive back in proper working order. It an HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSDA-T50L, running on a new ASUS laptop.

Hi iahoka, welcome to the forums.

The best option is to open 'Device Manager' (just type it into the Start Menu) and 'Remove' the device. This will completely remove it from the OS.
Note   Note
You may get a prompt to remove files, i'd do that also

If you then click the 'Scan for hardware changes' button (spy glass) it will re-search for all devices & start installing either the default driver, or it will search Windows Update for a driver.

You should now have a brand new (so to speak) CD/DVD device.

Hope this helps :)
